The mound of earth may be removed after growth has started the following spring. If planted too deeply they may not bloom. Cultiva'te your peonies as well as you do other things in your garden. They will stand more neglect in this respect than any flower I know, but they well repay any attention given them. They like plenty of water at blooming time and again when they are making their eyes for next year's growth. They should be kept away from trees and shrubs and planted in full sun, or where it shines for at least half the day. Be very careful not to break the eyes or stems when planting or cultivating. They will come up over a long period in the spring, 'so do not dig down to see if they. Are still living. They will come in their own good time. If you break the stems off at that time you may destroy your plant as they make no more stems after the first ones start. Plant them at least three feet apart each way, and four is better. They will soon meet. Remember when once planted a peony will last a lifetime usually and it should be left alone. Do not plant in wet ground. Your roots will rot.
