This work presents a design approach that links fatigue resistance of cast steel component to permissible defect sizes. It is based on fractures mechanics, is in line with experiences of the last 60 years and validated by extensive experimental as well as numerical investigations on different scales and under consideration of real casting defects. By following established assessment methods, the design concept is adapted to practical building applications.

The ability to quantify residual stresses induced by welding processes through experimentation or numerical simulation has become, today more than ever, of strategic importance in the context of their application to advanced design. This is an ongoing challenge that commenced many years ago. Recent design criteria endeavour to quantify the effect of residual stresses on fatigue strength of welded joints to allow a more efficient use of materials and a greater reliability of welded structures. The aim of the present book is contributing to these aspects of design through a collection of case-studies that illustrate both standard and advanced experimental and numerical methodologies used to assess the residual stress field in welded joints. The work is intended to be of assistance to designers, industrial engineers and academics who want to deepen their knowledge of this challenging topic.

- Within the scope of the present work, extensive experimental and numerical investigations are carried out on the crack propagation behaviour in steel plates under cyclic loading, which have been reinforced with adhesively bonded CFRP lamellas, as well as on the load-bearing and failure behaviour of CFRP-steel double-lap joints. Based on the results, a fracture mechanics engineering procedure for estimating the remaining service life of CFRP-reinforced steel plates is developed and validated.

- In this work, the damping properties of adhesively bonded joints are investigated numerically, experimentally and analytically. In numerical investigations on steel structures, the potential of bonded joints to optimise the structural dynamics is demonstrated. The damping properties of bonded joints are determined in experimental investigations. The development of a methodology for the analytical identification of functional relationships between the test results is a further focus of the work.

- This work describes investigations into the design of load-bearing bonded joints facade construction. The core element is the analysis of the time- and temperature-dependent load-bearing behavior of bonded joints. For this purpose, actions are analyzed, the time- and temperature-dependent behavior of various adhesives is investigated experimentally and theoretical considerations of the load-bearing behavior are carried out.
