His deep-set eyes were ablaze under craggy brows. His sharply chiseled features were reminiscent of the Great Emancipator himself. He was tall, angular, and obviously very intelligent. When he opened his mouth he was aiming a gun. When he spoke the bombardment began. The effects of his speaking were almost unparalleled in modern history. Over a half million people were converted through his ministry...in an age when there were no amplifiers or mass communications. He spearheaded a revival in America which literally altered the course of history. Harvard professor Perry Miller wrote, "Charles Grandison Finney led America out of the eighteenth century." He was denounced by clergy and secularist alike for his innovations in evangelism. He was intolerably ahead of his time. One preacher threatened to oppose him with cannon if he dared venture into his parish. Most of Finney's life was lived before the Civil War. And he hated slavery with a passion. He insisted that it was impossible to be on the right side of God and the wrong side of the slavery issue at the same time. When he took the presidency of Oberlin College he did so on the express condition that the institution be thoroughly integrated. The social implications of the preaching and example of this towering figure can scarcely be measured. Fortunately, his TEACHINGS CAN BE, for they are still with us. His convictions were born in the fires of revival and shaped by a keen lawyer's mind committed to the full authority of the Bible. So effective were his theological writings that they have been the impetus for revivals around the world since his death in 1875. It is with particular delight that we offer this special bicentennial edition of FINNEY'S SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY to the English-speaking public. In this and its companion volume, THE HEART OF TRUTH, are found the distinctive truths which swept a nation into consciousness of its need for Christ just before its most horrendous bloodbath. To further clarify the meanings of Finney's presentation a GLOSSRY OF TERMS is included in this volume. Welcome to a significant reading experience. Welcome to the revolutionary theology of Charles Grandison Finney. -Publisher

The Power of God at WorkCharles Finney’s ministry led to some of the most amazing revivals that have ever occurred in the United States or England. In Holy Spirit Revivals, Finney recalls those events, revealing the secrets that led to the mass conversions of lost souls in his meetings throughout upstate New York, as well as in Boston, Philadelphia, and London. Finney was unafraid of offending delicate ears by addressing the problem of sin head-on, and his dedication to prayer, his understanding of Scripture, and his radical reliance on the power of the Holy Spirit are a great template for believers today. This treasured account of one of the greatest Christian preachers in history is an outstanding resource for anyone interested in seeing a revival of faith in the church.

What is true Christianity? There is perhaps no better person in recent history to answer this question than Charles Finney. Finney (1792-1875) was the most powerful Christian preacher of the 1800s who sought to clearly articulate what the Scriptures say about living the true Christian life that pleases God. He fearlessly challenged his hearers to bring every aspect of their lives into obedience to God. This book contains sixteen messages of Finney that describe the essential practice of Christianity. Each message will challenge your faith in a deep way and call you to the life that God intends.

Daniel Migliore's Faith Seeking Understanding has been a standard introduction to Christian theology for more than a decade. The book's presentation of traditional doctrine in freshly contemporary ways, its concern to hear and critically engage new voices in theology, and its creative and accessible style have kept it one of the most stimulating, balanced, and readable guides to theology available. This second edition of Faith Seeking Understanding features improvements from cover to cover. Besides updating and expanding the entire text of the book, Migliore has added two completely new chapters. The first, "Confessing Jesus Christ in Context," explores the unique contributions to Christian theology made by recent theologians working in the African American, Asian American, Latin American, Hispanic, feminist, womanist, and mujerista traditions. The second new chapter, "The Finality of Jesus Christ and Religious Pluralism," addresses the growing interest in the relationship of Christianity to other religions and their adherents. Migliore's three delightful theological dialogues are followed by a new appendix, an extensive glossary of theological terms, making the book even more useful to students seeking to understand the history, themes, and challenges of Christian belief.
