Long ago, fish fins evolved into the limbs of land vertebrates and tetrapods. During this transition, some elements of the fin were carried over while new features developed. Lizard limbs, bird wings, and human arms and legs are therefore all evolutionary modifications of the original tetrapod limb. A comprehensive look at the current state of research on fin and limb evolution and development, this volume addresses a wide range of subjects—including growth, structure, maintenance, function, and regeneration. An investigation was made in the Langley stability tunnel to determine the effects of ventral fins at two positions (zero and -70 degrees dihedral) on the lateral stability derivatives of a 45 degrees swept high-wing model oscillating in yaw. The effect of the ventral fins on the stability derivatives was determined with and without the vertical and horizontal tails for an angle-of-attack range of zero to 30 degrees at a Mach number of 0.13 and a Reynolds number of 830,000, based on the wing mean aerodynamic chord. The steady-state derivatives for a similar model without ventral fins are also presented. No discussion of the data has been made in order to expedite their publication.

Spin-tunnel tests have been conducted on dynamic models of two fighter airplanes to explore the feasibility of using deployable flexible ventral fins as an emergency spin-recovery device. Various fin configurations, deflections, and locations were tested. The results indicated that the fins provided satisfactory spin recoveries for the models tested.
