An in-depth account of the 1968 London air tragedy that claimed five lives—includes interviews with cabin crew, passengers, and air traffic controllers. One and a half minutes after takeoff on the clear and sunny afternoon of April 8, 1968, the Number 2 engine of BOAC Boeing 707 G-ARWE broke away from its mounting pylon and fell, tumbling in flames. Captain Cliff Taylor managed an extremely smooth touchdown about 400 yards beyond the Heathrow runway threshold and the aircraft came to a stop 1,400 yards further along the runway. The cabin crew had the doors open and passengers began escaping from the starboard over-wing exit and then via chutes at the forward and rear galley doors. Several explosions occurred and the port wing fell off, the resulting blast hurling flaming debris over the side of the aircraft. The rear escape chute was damaged by the fire and burst but, of the 126 people aboard, most of the 121 survivors had escaped before the arrival of the main fire and rescue services. Thirty-eight people received treatment for injuries and five, including stewardess Barbara Jane Harrison, were overcome by heat and fumes and died aboard G-ARWE. For her bravery in trying to rescue the remaining passengers on that day, Harrison was awarded the George Cross. “An amazing story . . . a fitting tribute to Jane and the other unfortunate people who lost their lives. It is extremely well written and I would highly recommend it.” —Jonathan Wright

Heathrow S Terminal 5 written by Sharon Doherty and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-04-30 with Architecture categories.

This book reveals the inside track on the making of Terminal 5: the courage, the ground-breaking management thinking and the many lessons learnt from the leaders, the client and integrated supply chain teams, - involving over 50,000 people from 20,000 companies - which led to the successful delivery of this mega project on time, on budget, and safely. Love or hate Heathrow we can’t ignore it! An economic power house for the UK, 155,000 earn their living from it and 68 million of us pass through it each year. Two decades of the planning, design, construction and opening of Terminal 5 has resulted in a gateway that Heathrow can be proud of. Faced with the risk of opening a year late, being a billion overspent, since Sir John Egan in the early 1990s, BAA, stakeholders and supplier partners have been grappling with Terminal 5`s challenges. The result? £4.3 billion of design and construction delivered on time, to budget and safely is to be commended given the industry statistics but the acid test will now be the quality of the 30 million passengers experience and the operating costs that have been left to stand the test of time. Sharon Doherty is HR and organisational effectiveness director for Heathrow airport and Terminal 5. Sharon has previously worked in consultancy, financial services and retail. Her specialism is people and change. 2002 to the end 2007 she was accountable for the approach to people management and organisational change on Terminal 5.

The Mammoth Book Of Air Disasters And Near Misses written by Paul Simpson and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-16 with History categories.

An incredible 30,000 flights – at least – arrive safely at their destinations every day. But a handful don’t, while some come terrifyingly close to crashing. When even the smallest thing does go wrong at 35,000 feet, the result is nearly always a fast-unfolding tragedy. This extensive collection of compelling real-life accounts of air disasters and near-disasters provides a sobering, alternative history of the just over 105 years that passengers have been travelling by air, from the very earliest fatality to recent calamities. But there are incredible stories of heroism against the odds, too, such as that of Captain Chesley Sullenberger who successfully landed his aircraft with both engines gone on the Hudson River in New York, saving the lives of everyone aboard, and of the American Airlines crew who prevented terrorist Richard Reid from exploding a bomb hidden in his shoe three months after 9/11. The book also details the often ingenious, always painstaking work done by air-accident investigators, while a glossary helps to clarify the occasional, inevitable bits of jargon.

Overcoming Intractable Conflicts written by Miriam F. Elman and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-26 with Political Science categories.

Despite considerable progress in research and practice in the constructive transformation of intractable conflicts beginning in the 1970s, many terribly destructive conflicts have recently erupted. New circumstances have emerged that have resulted in regressions. The contributions in this book examine many of the new challenges and obstacles to the transformation of intractable conflicts. It also offers an array of new and promising opportunities for constructive transformations. The book brings together analyses of U.S.-based conflicts with those from many regions of the world. International, intra-state, and local conflicts are explored, along with those that have been violent and non-violent. The diversity in disciplines among the authors provides a wide range of theoretical approaches to explaining how a variety of intractable conflicts can be transformed. Case studies of local, national, and transnational conflicts serve to illustrate this new landscape. These analyses are complemented by conceptual discussions relating to new conflict systems, actors, dynamics and strategies. Policy implications of findings are also presented.
