""Firework Festivals"" dives deep into the captivating tradition of pyrotechnics, exploring why these dazzling displays hold such universal appeal. More than mere entertainment, fireworks serve as potent symbols of cultural identity, social meaning, and historical narratives. For instance, their origins trace back to ancient China where they were initially used in religious ceremonies. The book examines how these fiery celebrations evolved and spread across the globe, adapting to different cultures and becoming integral to events like Independence Day in the United States. The book uniquely combines historical analysis with technical explanations and sociological insights. It begins by laying a historical foundation, then meticulously dissects firework production, covering everything from chemical composition to safety protocols. Finally, the book looks towards the future, addressing advancements in sustainable pyrotechnics and the integration of digital technologies. The book argues that fireworks are not frivolous but ""powerful cultural artifacts,"" connecting to history, chemistry, and sociology.

A landmark in the study of early modern Europe, this two-volume collection makes available for the first time a selection of the most important texts from court and civic festival books. Festival entertainments were presented to mark such occasions as royal and ducal entries to capital cities, dynastic marriages, the birth and christening of heirs, religious feasts and royal and ducal funerals. Europa Triumphans represents the chronological and trans-European range of the court and civic festival. These festivals are considered not simply as texts, but as events, and are introduced by groups of scholars, each with a specialist knowledge of the political, social and cultural significance of the festival and of the iconography, spectacle, music, dance, voice and gesture in which they were expressed. To demonstrate the geographic spread and political significance of festivals, and to illustrate the range of aesthetic languages they deploy, the festivals included in these two volumes are grouped in the following sections: Henri III; Genoa; Poland-Lithuania; The Netherlands; The Protestant Union; La Rochelle; Scandinavia; and The New World. These texts provide many valuable insights into the variety of political systems and historical circumstances that formed them. Beautifully produced with 148 black-and-white and 23 colour illustrations, Europa Triumphans represents an invaluable reference source for the study of early modern Europe. It presents texts both in transcription and translated into English, and is supplemented with introductory essays and commentaries. Europa Triumphans is co-published by Ashgate and the Modern Humanities Research Association, in conjunction with the AHRB Centre for the Study of the Renaissance at the University of Warwick, UK.

Bursting with images from across time, a sparkling chronicle of rockets, pinwheels, and more. This book illuminates the glittering history of fireworks, from their mysterious beginnings to the dazzling big-budget displays of today. It describes how they enthralled the world’s royal courts and became a sensation across the British Empire. There are stories of innovations like “living fireworks,” fiercely fought international competitions, and the technology behind modern showpieces viewed by millions. Practitioners say fireworks are an art, and they have inspired artists from Shakespeare, Handel, Dickens, and Whistler to Katy Perry. But John Withington also covers fireworks’ practical uses—rescues at sea, attempts to control the weather—while not ignoring their dangers, accidents, or efforts to make them safer.

Festival Cities written by John R. Gold and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-03 with Architecture categories.
Festivals have always been part of city life, but their relationship with their host cities has continually changed. With the rise of industrialization, they were largely considered peripheral to the course of urban affairs. Now they have become central to new ways of thinking about the challenges of economic and social change, as well as repositioning cities within competitive global networks. In this timely and thought-provoking book, John and Margaret Gold provide a reflective and evidence-based historical survey of the processes and actors involved, charting the ways that regular festivals have now become embedded in urban life and city planning. Beginning with David Garrick’s rain-drenched Shakespearean Jubilee and ending with Sydney’s flamboyant Mardi Gras celebrations, it encompasses the emergence and consolidation of city festivals. After a contextual historical survey that stretches from Antiquity to the late nineteenth century, there are detailed case studies of pioneering European arts festivals in their urban context: Venice’s Biennale, the Salzburg Festival, the Cannes Film Festival and Edinburgh’s International Festival. Ensuing chapters deal with the worldwide proliferation of arts festivals after 1950 and with the ever-increasing diversifycation of carnival celebrations, particularly through the actions of groups seeking to assert their identity. The conclusion draws together the book’s key themes and sketches the future prospects for festival cities. Lavishly illustrated, and copiously researched, this book is essential reading not just for urban geographers, social historians and planners, but also for anyone interested in contemporary festival and events tourism, urban events strategy, urban regeneration regeneration, or simply building a fuller understanding of the relationship between culture, planning and the city.
