Excerpt from Book of Worship With Hymns and Tunes AT the meeting of the General Synod at Canton, in 1893, two Com mittees, of five members each, were appointed, one to revise the Hymns, the other the Tunes, of our Book of Worship, the two Committees to act in co operation. At the next convention of the General Synod, these Committees reported as instructed, giving the plan of their proceedings as well as their results. These may be found printed in the Minutes of the Convention at Hagerstown, Md., in 189 5. At that time they were authorized to complete their nearly finished work and hand it over to the Hymn Book Publishing Committee for publication, allowing the Church three months more for sug gestions. Careful attention was given to all the suggestions - very few in number - which were offered. The delay in publication has arisen not from any want of harmony in the Committees on the work, but from the nature of the case, and, largely, from the difficulties connected with securing the right to use hymns and tunes that were copyright property. Care has been taken to give correctly the names and dates of the authors of hymns and tunes, and where the original text of hymns has been changed, this is indicated by the letter a (altered). In many cases the number of stanzas has been lessened. In a number of instances familiar hymns have alternate, unnumbered tunes attached. Excerpt from Hymns for Divine Worship The present collection is larger than was first contemplated, and larger also than can soon be exhausted in any series of ser vices connected with one congregation. But then, in the first place, it was quickly found that the stores at command were so rich as to offer great temptations to exceed the limits originally prescribed. Again, it was remembered that the collection was not designed for a single congregation or society, but for many such united in one Denomination; nor therefore fora single minister, whose ordinary selection of hymns might be limited to his own individual taste or type of ministry, but for a considerable number discharging the same religious functions each Lord's-day, in whom varieties of taste and modes of handling the Word of God might reasonably be supposed to exist great enough to turn to profitable account even a larger collection than is here brought together. Moreover, the wish was to cover with the service of song as much of the whole field of Christian experience as possible, - to furnish a book of devotion for the closet, as well as a selection of psalms and hymns and spiritual songs for the sanctuary; and to do both with as much fulness and completeness as would minister to almost every variety of religious sentiment, either by first suggesting and exciting it, or, when excited, by supplying the language in which it should find most fitting ex press1on. For this purpose the works of nearly all our hymn-writers have been examined, and the best of them laid under heavy tribute. By far the largest contribution has been levied on the compositions of the two Wesleys, whose service in this department of Christian literature would probably be found, could we estimate its whole effect in the actual experience of now living and of glorified piety, the richest part of that entire legacy which their genius and sanctity have bequeathed to successive generations of believers from their own time to the end of all things. But to their compositions others have been added of men worthy to stand by their side, together with the choicest productions of many more only just inferior to those. Excerpt from Hymns and Hymn Makers But let us go further and ask What constitutes a good hymn for public worship? It must give voice to the general need. It must move to adoration. It must lift. Even a penitential hymn should lift - although, like the Dies [rae, it may first lay low in the dust, for, as Browning teaches us, there is a stoop of the soul which in bending upraises it too, an Obeisance in spirit by which we climb to God's feet. Further, a good hymn should have certain striking ideas vividly, memorably expressed, those ideas forming a connected whole. The diamonds Should be so strung together that each may give lustre to all the rest. A good hymn is not necessarily informing. It is not the function of a hymn to instruct or awaken thought, that should be the function of a sermon. A hymn has to do with the emotions rather than with the intellect, though fresh thought, if it be Of the order that commends itself at once to the mind, is welcome. Anything, however, in praise as in prayer that arrests the flow Of devotional feeling, that excites the critical faculty, or prompts us to ask What does the writer mean here? Is to be con demned. Poems may be packed with thought and SO quaintly, daintily phrased that you linger over every line, but a hymn must march straight forward and carry the singer by a natural sequence to the end without a break. In language, too, a good hymn Should be simple and direct, SO as to be easily understood, and it should also be melodious, its cadences falling gratefully on the ear.
