Excerpt from First Book of Natural History The starry heavens, during a clear night, pre sent to us the appearance of the hollow surface of a vast hemisphere, which seems to be bounded by an immense plain, in the centre of which we are placed. The circle which terminates our view, where the sky and earth appear to meet, is called the Horizon. In the Celestial Sphere, or Sky, are placed those bodies which give or reflect light, and are called the Sun, Moon, and Stars. These from their shape are called Globes, and are supposed to be inhabited. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from First Book of Nature The order in which the topics have been treated, is the one that appeared most natural, and easiest to follow - animals, plants, and minerals of earth, and the most conspicuous objects of the heavens. No detailed classification has been attempted; nor have technical definitions or terms been employed; but it is hoped that the plan here adopted, will serve the reader as an introduction to a more thorough and systematic study of natural science, if to pursue such should be his desire. Excerpt from Curiosities of Natural History The Preface is generally the last portion of a book which is written, and on this account it ought to be read first. I would beg of those into whose hands this book should come, to reverse the usual order of things, and to read the Preface before they dip into the contents. They will then know why it was written. Excerpt from A First Lesson in Natural History This little book, long out of print, is now offered by us to teachers as one of our "Science Guides," because it fits very appropriately into the series. With admirable clearness and brevity, it gives in narrative form for young children a general history of Hydroids, Corals, and Echinoderms; thus rendering unnecessary a part of the work we had proposed to ourselves in connection with our late lectures on this subject. It will be found, we think, of great service where this kind of teaching is needed, and has saved us much trouble and expense in the preparation of the supplementary guide which is to follow. For the use of the wood-cuts we are indebted to Mr. Alexander Agassiz. It is one of many favors received at the hands of the family of the late Professor Agassiz, as well as from others; all of which it will be a pleasant duty to acknowledge at some future time. Excerpt from The Natural History of the Cranes: A Monograph The story Of this volume is soon told. On the arrival for the first time in this country Of a pair Of the beautiful white-naped cranes Of Japan, they were drawn by Mr. T. W. Wood for The Field, when Mr. E. Blyth, availing himself of the Opportunity, published in the columns of that paper a monograph of all the then known species of the Gruidae. These articles were soon exhausted. I thought of reproducing them in a literal reprint, and had proceeded as far as the introduction, when Professor Newton forwarded to me a copy of his article Crane, in the Encyclopaedia Britannica. In this he stated an admirably succinct account of all the different species was communicated by the late Mr. Blyth to The Field newspaper in 1873, which, it is much to be regretted, has not since been published in a more accessible form. Excerpt from The Romance of Natural History Perhaps between the six days' work of Creation and the Noachic Flood, Europe became much altered in outline, and in elevation. It may have been, at first, a great archipelago, agreeing with the epithet by which it is designated in early Scripture, 'the Isles, '2 and by which it was subsequently known for ages.' The Pyre nees, the Alps, and the Apennines, already emerged, The gradual but constant elevation of the bed of the Baltic, and the subsidence of that of the Pacific Ocean, are examples on a large scale. Excerpt from Introduction to the Natural History of Language The present book is what its title implies it is an out line. So far as it is a student's book, it is meant for nothing more than a first general survey of the field. It does not hope to enlighten materially the professional philologist, but only to bring him disciples. Nevertheless, it is no mere compilation. The facts are necessarily in a considerable measure the same facts which have done duty in other works, whether general or special, but the writer trusts that he has employed sufficient independence of thought in weighing various theories against the material, and in offer ing, with all due diffidence, conclusions or speculations of his own.
