Excerpt from Zoology: A Text-Book for Secondary Schools, Normal Schools and Colleges 2. The first thing to be sought therefore is a thorough-going appreciation on the part of the student of the attractiveness, the scope, and importance of animals and their activities. 3. A first course should really be a foundation course, and as such should give the student a broad and catholic view of the whole subject. It should utilize all the main departments of Zoology, because each department contains matter which should be familiar to all persons of ordinary education. Furthermore, the departments of morphology, physiology, ecology, distribution, and classification furnish exercises which have distinct, and yet complementary, pedagogical value. Any single phase of the subject, however important or interesting, gives a false and therefore an unscientific view of the wonderful science of Zoology, unless it is supplemented by the others. Therefore a book, if it is to serve the pedagogical needs of beginners, should contain fairly representative matter from all the main departments of the science; and it should at the same time provide both for the descriptive work and for the practical work in the field and laboratory. 4. Laboratory work and field work are essential, both to proper interest and to proper results, and should not be merely illustrative of text or lecture work, but as far as possible should be the foundation and point of departure of the lectures and the text. No instrumentality open to the teacher is better than the laboratory as a means of securing real interest and mental growth for the pupils. However, in order to attain this end it is essential that this work shall really be vitally done. It is not enough that a pupil be induced to observe and to record his observations. The pupil's mind should always be encouraged to "follow through" to whatever response in the way of conclusion or explanation seems sound in the light of his knowledge at the time. Excerpt from First Lessons in Zoology This book, an introduction to the study of animals and their life, is intended for use in schools which do not care to undertake to dissect a series of types or examples. In this book the life-history and habits of familiar animals, rather than their structure and classification, are made the basis for a beginning study of zoology. But this is not a reading book, or nature-study story book. It is a guide and outline for constant, specific personal work in observation, and answering questions by means of this observation, on the part of the pupils, and only such telling of facts is included as seems necessary to make significant and coherent and related the self-made discoveries of the pupils. The actual method of use of the book will be obvious to any teacher into whose hands it may fall. The succession of chapters is one that seems natural and useful to the author; for any teacher it will be, of course, a simple matter to modify and re-arrange the course of work as outlined. In fact the opportunities for obtaining material for study offered by the situation of the school, as, for example, whether on the seashore or in the interior near a lake or river, or on the dry plains, and the relation of the school terms to the seasons of the year, and other special and varying conditions, will dictate in large measure the teacher's actual procedure. The numbered parts of the book indicate the classification of the study of animals into particular phases or kinds of study rather than a definite linear arrangement or sequence of this study. The lessons or subjects of Part IV, for example, should be interpolated wherever the teacher finds fittest opportunity in connection with the study of special animals or groups of animals. Chapters VI, VII, and VIII of Part II have to do with that part of the study of animals which, as usually treated, demands the facilities of equipped laboratories. Excerpt from A Laboratory Guide for Beginners in Zoology It is generally conceded that a satisfactory course in zoology requires both laboratory study of animal forms and lecture or text-book presentation of the laws of animal life. The teachers most conversant with pedagogical principles also contend that the greatest educational value of the subject lies in the opportunity it gives to furnish the student with an adequate first-hand knowledge of organic evolution. To accomplish this a course in which the pupil begins with the lower forms and works gradually upward is necessary. For the pupil thus follows the development of living things, seeing how each succeeding form is an improvement over the one that went before, and getting some idea of the great laws which govern the growth and sequence of animal life. In his study of these forms of life the pupil needs a guide which shall lead him wisely without telling him too much, and which shall stimulate him to see and to think without bewildering him with questions that he cannot answer. In this little book such an attempt is made. Since the directions were first used in my own classes some ten years ago modifications have been made every year, until in their present form I have found them thoroughly workable with average classes of beginners in zoology. In no other country is so high a place assigned to the natural and physical sciences as a means of education. It therefore follows naturally that the French have tho best text-books upon these subjects. Translations of their advanced works have been the authorized class-books in American colleges for the last quarter of a century, and Paul Bert's "First Steps in Scientific Knowledge" and "Primer of Scientific Knowledge" have made the successful teaching of elementary science possible in the earlier years of the educational course. The present work treats the subject of natural history in a manner adapted to the needs of secondary schools, using methods found by experience to excite most interest on the part of the pupil. In the translation the plan of the original work has been followed closely; but such changes have been made as were needed to Americanize the book. Tho illustrations form an important feature of such a work. We desire to extend our thanks to Messrs. W. and R. Chambers & Co. for permission to use cuts from the new Chambers's Encyclopædia, without which it would have been extremely difficult to givo the book its present value in this respect.
