At the beginning of His ministry, Jesus invites men to join Him. Most of them were fishermen and Jesus told them He would make them "Fishers of men." Jesus is calling them to receive the gift of eternal life, but they don't yet know who He is. The Psalms tell us to "taste and see that the Lord is good;" salvation comes first as an experience we receive internally in the heart by faith before we gain understanding intellectually of what we have received. These men would see Jesus do amazing miracles and hear His penetrating words over a period of three years. Eventually, they would understand how Jesus fulfilled numerous Old Testament prophecies that proved that He is the Christ. * Part Two: "Abide in Me" At the end of His ministry, the night before He goes to the cross, Jesus gives these men a new commandment: "abide in Me." This second invitation is meaningful only after we have made the commitment to follow Jesus. We are then able to fully engage in a living relationship with Him because His Holy Spirit now lives within us and helps us understand His letter to us, the Bible. This second part is intended to be used as a daily devotional guide that will lead you into a deeper spiritual walk with Christ. Many Christians who have responded to Jesus's invitation to "follow Me" fail to take this second step to "abide in Me." It is only by learning how to abide in Him that we are able to retain the joy and peace we first experienced when we came to Him to receive His gift of salvation. I encourage you to use this devotional as a means of entering into the fullness of your salvation; to become "rooted and built up in Him, established in the faith as you were taught and overflowing with thankfulness." (Colossians 2:7)
