Excerpt from First Lessons in Geometry The child's powers of sensation are developed before his powers of conception, and these before his reasoning powers. This is, therefore, the true order of education and a powerful logi cal drill, like Colburn's admirable first lessons of Arithmetic, is sadly out of place in the hands of a child whose powers of observation and conception have, as yet, received no training whatever. I have, therefore, avoided reasoning, and sirnply given interesting geometrical facts, fitted, I h0pe, to arouse a child to the observation of phenomena, and to the perception of forms as real entities. Excerpt from First Lessons in Geometry: Upon the Model of Colburn's First Lessons in Arithmetic I. It aims to give a simpler and plainer form to the ele ments of Geometry, and thus to bring the science, without sacrificing any of that strictness of demonstration which is its peculiar glory, within the province of the common school, and the reach even of the quite young. The relations of place, and form, and magnitude are those of which the youthful, not to say the mature, mind conceives most easily and most distinctly; and it has long seemed to me a subject for regret, that we have had no work in our list of common school books (however excellent treatises may have been pre pared for higher institutions, or for special purposes) to take advantage of these juvenile conceptions, to give to them a scientific form, and to make them the foundation of elevated and accurate attainment. "This is a book in the tradition of Euclidean synthetic geometry written by one of the twentieth century's great mathematicians. The original audience was pre-college teachers, but it is useful as well to gifted high school students and college students, in particular, to mathematics majors interested in geometry from a more advanced standpoint. The text starts where Euclid starts, and covers all the basics of plane Euclidean geometry. But this text does much more. It is at once pleasingly classic and surprisingly modern. The problems (more than 450 of them) are well-suited to exploration using the modern tools of dynamic geometry software. For this reason, the present edition includes a CD of dynamic solutions to select problems, created using Texas Instruments' TI-Nspire Learning Software. The TI-Nspire documents demonstrate connections among problems and - through the free trial software included on the CD - will allow the reader to explore and interact with Hadamard's Geometry in new ways. The material also includes introductions to several advanced topics. The exposition is spare, giving only the minimal background needed for a student to explore these topics. Much of the value of the book lies in the problems, whose solutions open worlds to the engaged reader. And so this book is in the Socratic tradition, as well as the Euclidean, in that it demands of the reader both engagement and interaction. A forthcoming companion volume that includes solutions, extensions, and classroom activities related to the problems can only begin to open the treasures offered by this work. We are just fortunate that one of the greatest mathematical minds of recent times has made this effort to show to readers some of the opportunities that the intellectual tradition of Euclidean geometry has to offer."--Jacket.

From the reviews: "The work is carefully written. It is well motivated, and interesting to read, even if it is not always easy... historical material is included... the author has written excellent account of an interesting subject." Mathematical Gazette "A well-written, very thorough account ... Among the topi are lattices, reduction, Minkowskis Theorem, distance functions, packings, and automorphs; some applications to number theory; excellent bibliographical references." The uniqueness of this text in combining geometric topology and differential geometry lies in its unifying thread: the notion of a surface. With numerous illustrations, exercises and examples, the student comes to understand the relationship of the modern abstract approach to geometric intuition. The text is kept at a concrete level, avoiding unnecessary abstractions, yet never sacrificing mathematical rigor. The book includes topics not usually found in a single book at this level.

Classical Topics In Discrete Geometry written by Károly Bezdek and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-06-23 with Mathematics categories.

Geometry is a classical core part of mathematics which, with its birth, marked the beginning of the mathematical sciences. Thus, not surprisingly, geometry has played a key role in many important developments of mathematics in the past, as well as in present times. While focusing on modern mathematics, one has to emphasize the increasing role of discrete mathematics, or equivalently, the broad movement to establish discrete analogues of major components of mathematics. In this way, the works of a number of outstanding mathema- cians including H. S. M. Coxeter (Canada), C. A. Rogers (United Kingdom), and L. Fejes-T oth (Hungary) led to the new and fast developing eld called discrete geometry. One can brie y describe this branch of geometry as the study of discrete arrangements of geometric objects in Euclidean, as well as in non-Euclidean spaces. This, as a classical core part, also includes the theory of polytopes and tilings in addition to the theory of packing and covering. D- crete geometry is driven by problems often featuring a very clear visual and applied character. The solutions use a variety of methods of modern mat- matics, including convex and combinatorial geometry, coding theory, calculus of variations, di erential geometry, group theory, and topology, as well as geometric analysis and number theory.
