At age eighty, Tony Taylor journeys from Sydney, Australia, to British Columbia to fish the Cowichan River with his eight-year-old grandson, Ned. The trip is an opportunity for Tony to return to a landscape that has had a profound effect on his life and his way of thinking, and to share this place with his grandson. As Tony teaches Ned the patient art of fly-fishing, a lifetime of memories, thoughts, and stories unspool in peaceful reflections by the water's edge. Fishing the River of Time is an elegant meditation on nature, life, and family, written with warmth and wisdom. It inspires self-reflection and an appreciation of the natural world and the fundamentals of our human experience. It is destined to become a classic work of simple living in the mold of Henry David Thoreau's Walden.

This is a story about a young woman who is a game warden in the rural hills of western Massachusetts, where generations of her family have lived before her. She finds herself, through a freak accident, transported back in time a hundred years to the same area. She is found, injured, by the local doctor, with whom a friendship quickly develops. She realizes that it will be impossible for her to continue in the profession of wildlife law enforcement and must now learn to live in a different time, where there are different rules pertaining to women. As she struggles to adjust to a life where all that she loved and knew has been lost to her, she is fascinated by the people around her and the lives that they are living. She wrestles with the difficult choice of whether or not to reveal what she knows about future events, particularly after meeting her own great-grandparents. As the days go by, she develops friendships and starts to put down her own roots, learning to accept what has been lost to her and embracing her new life, until the day comes when she is faced with the choice of staying or leaving forever.

One beautiful autumn day, Art sets out with his mother and grandfather for a fishing trip. Fishing days are Art’s favorite. He loves learning the ropes from Grandpa—the different kinds of flies and tackle and the trout that frequent their favorite river. Art especially appreciates Grandpa’s stories. But, this time, hearing the story about Mom’s big catch on her first cast ever makes Art feel insecure about his own fishing skills. But, as Art hooks a beautiful brown trout, he finds reassurance in Grandpa’s stories and marvels in the sport and a day spent with family, promising to continue the tradition with his own grandkids generations later. Illustrated with lush imagery by rising star April Chu, Down by the River celebrates fishing, family, and fun.

This volume provides a selection of the most significant papers presented at the Second Conference on Fish Telemetry in Europe in La Rochelle, France, in April 1997. The conference was attended by 100 scientists from 18 countries. The contributions are grouped under the following headings: Methodology and New Developments, Tagging Procedures, Behavioural and Physiological Ecology, Fish Migration, Stock Management and Conservation. Particular emphasis was put on tag miniaturisation, multiple functions and sampling strategies. Papers concerned the effects of tags on fish for consolidating behavioural or original physiological investigations noticeably more open to the marine environment. Methods were essentially applied to study the relationships between fish and their natural environment. Besides providing up-to-date information on the state of fish telemetry, the book illustrates the increase in spatial and temporal scales and the number of tracked fish which gives a statistical basis for field study in behavioural ecology.

On angling as a woman in the first half of the twentieth century. Like fast moving currents, the fishing tales in The Fly Fisher and the River move us through a selection of Max Atherton’s experiences both within rivers’ waters as well as at their outer edges. They remind us that alongside the (then-) radical environmentalist-explorer part of her, there was a playful joie de vivre, someone who appreciated the company of good-looking, intelligent outdoorsmen. Even before her husband’s death, Max enjoyed the attention she got as a fisherwoman. While she cherished a few female friendships, Max held the opinion that women did not generally engage their minds as much as they could and tended to settle for less in their lives than she was willing to. The men she liked—educated, with leisure time to fish—had more freedom and could have adventures and talk about ideas, politics, and the intricacies of fly fishing. This refined form of angling provided an escape from the mundane, and Max enjoyed the adrenaline rush of fishing and camping in the great outdoors as much as the meditative quiet time in nature. Her expertise provided the entrée she needed to thrive in a man’s world—a fact reflected in her writing about the joys of casting her lines into one river after another. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Our books offer both practical advice on tackle, techniques, knots, and more, as well as lyrical prose on fishing for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, baitfish, catfish, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
