If memory does not fail me, I believe it was Paolo Mantegazza (1831-1910) who, in his Physiology of Pleasure (Fisiologia del piacere, Milan, 1880) described the great and unusual pleasure of poking a very sharp blade into a pumpkin. This is just one of the many examples we can draw from the million pleasures a human being can experience or fantasize about at all latitudes of thought, simply by following one's senses.A long time ago I met a young man who was becoming aware of his homosexuality. He had realized he was greatly attracted to male naked feet - but only to the left one. Such simple example might show the inutility of handbooks such as Mantegazza's...Do you remember the joke about that guy who tells his friend that he takes great delight in hammering at his own toes? When his friend asks him: "And when do you actually feel pleasure?", he replies: "When I miss the target". This is just a joke, but it may hide some truth, as well as the endless paths that human pleasure can take.Though it has undoubtedly common archetypical matrixes, can pleasure "specialize" itself, or simply differentiate itself along wider categories?I believe it can specialize, and the environmental factor can be determining above anything else.Let's take for instance one of the main pleasures of Irish and Scottish people who, in order to find comfort from the strong chilly wind that sweeps their streets, spend long hours in pubs drinking pints of good beer, such as the world famous Guinness. Do you think the environmental factor played a little role in the development of such "national pleasure"? Of course it has played a very relevant role, and it can also explain why, at different latitudes, people go surfing all year round. This is obviously just one of the many variables - along with the socio-economic, cultural, social, political, religious, and so on - that should be taken into consideration. In many countries with a political dictatorship government, for instance, sport has always been celebrated and supported, and this national pleasure often gained much international recognition. In Tibet religious teachings have always been coupled with a great concern for body discipline intended not in agonistic terms but as a means of purification. Moreover, the practice of yoga is not only a need, but certainly also a collective pleasure, a sort of national sport. In this context is thus necessary to focus on the geographical coordinates of a place - its latitude and longitude - in order to consider climatic as well as cultural, political and religious factors. It goes without saying that, without any ambition to write a manual as powerful as Mantegazza's on such a topic, it will be valuable to take into account the teachings of anthropologists, sociologists and psychologists in our attempt to illustrate in pictures - lightly, but not in a banal way - the thousand shades of pleasure for a very limited part of the world population.Naples and Neapolitans are no exception, and this is precisely the aim of my book... (from the Preface).

Physician, anthropologist, travel writer, novelist, politician, Paolo Mantegazza (1831-1910) was probably the most eclectic figure in late-nineteenth century Italian culture. A prolific writer, Mantegazza can be seen as a forerunner of what has come to be known as cultural studies on account of his interdisciplinary approach, his passionate blend of scientific and literary elements in his writings, and his ability to transcend the boundaries between 'high' and 'low' culture. Though extremely popular during his lifetime both in Italy and abroad, Mantegazza's works have not been made available in a significant English language compilation. This volume is a representative overview of Mantegazza's key works, many of them translated into English for the first time. In addition to the unabridged Physiology of Love (1873), a veritable best-seller at the time of its initial publication, this compilation features selections from Mantegazza's writings on medicine, his travelogues, his epistolary novel One Day in Madeira (1868), and his treatise on materialistic aesthetics. Replete with an extensive and informative introduction by the editor, The Physiology of Love and Other Writings also excerpts Mantegazza's works of science fiction, memoir, and social and cultural criticism. As an anthology of the works of Paolo Mantegazza, a writer of diverse topical orientations, this volume is also an account of the circulation of ideas and cross-fertilization of disciplines that defined a crucial period of Italian and European cultural life.

This volume is part of the definitive edition of letters written by and to Charles Darwin, the most celebrated naturalist of the nineteenth century. Notes and appendixes put these fascinating and wide-ranging letters in context, making the letters accessible to both scholars and general readers. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically: volume 20 includes letters from 1872, the year in which The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals was published, making ground-breaking use of photography. Also in this year, the sixth and final edition of On the Origin of Species was published and Darwin resumed his work on carnivorous plants and plant movement, finding unexpected similarities between the plant and animal kingdoms.
