Her traveling companions, Karen and Sofia, go to London and visit the tourist attractions there. Karen writes a travel story entitled, “England in the Footsteps of Its Literary Giants.” They make a trip to Belgium, where Karen meets her Belgian relatives for the first time and falls in love with her 4th cousin, Alphonse, who lives in Leuven, Belgium. Exotic cultures, strange lands, and proud monarchies confronted the Portuguese and Spaniards who came to South-East Asia in the sixteenth century with the practical objectives of securing control of the profitable trade in export of spices to Europe, and - to a lesser extent - of combating Islam, their traditional foe in the Mediterranean. The pursuit of commercial and strategic advantages brought the Dutch, English, and French on their heels. Later still, the nineteenth century saw the arrival of explorers seeking to discover the sources of the great rivers of the region, naturalists who ranged far afield to collect specimens, and literary travellers, professional photographers, married women, and other visitors who recorded their experiences. This anthology offers selections from the abundant range of European writing, expressing the fascination, the excitement, and sometimes the violence or danger of personal adventures and encounters in South-East Asia. It is the work of a talented minority who found delight in a strange world of their time, a world which is rapidly changing and vanishing. These writers have left a vivid record for the entertainment of the modern reader.

Excerpts from over 100 travel writings of Europe, from 16th c. pilgrimage diaries thru early specimens of modern tourism accounts to 20th c. impressions from the other side of the Iron Curtain By focusing on east European travel writings, this work enlarges both the documentary base and the terms of the debate over a rich source for discussions of identities and mentalities; knowledge and power; gender; and cultural change. The texts – chosen for their relevance, but literary criteria have also been taken into account – illustrate the variety of ways in which east Europeans have written about the West. Most of the material is presented in English for the first time or, in a few cases, rescued from dusty oblivion in long out-of-print volumes. Each text is introduced with a short passage placing it in context. This is the first volume of the three-part set East Looks West. Vol. 2. Under Eastern Eyes. A Comparative Introduction to East European Travel Writing on Europe, 1550–2000; Vol. 3. A Bibliography of East European Travel Writing on Europe.

A Billion Trips a Day: Tradition and Transition in European Travel Patterns consists of twenty-four original chapters developed by a network of transport professionals in a coordinated manner. The three parts of the book are: European Mobility Patterns; Dimensions of European Mobility, and National Perspectives. Mobility in fourteen countries is described and ten chapters of analysis compare the major dimensions of travel across Europe, which is seen as a laboratory for transport policies. A Billion Trips a Day: Tradition and Transition in European Travel Patterns questions the uniqueness of European travel and transport policies and demonstrates that, in many ways, Europe is different from other developed economies. However, there are side dissimilarities within Europe. The authors take a deep look at the underlying factors which affect travel behavior, with the objective of providing the necessary information for policy making. The comparative chapters of Part II provide an analysis based on national perspectives of the role of the time dimension travel; automobile ownership and use; commuting; public transport; and international travel. They also review the transport policies applied in Europe, explaining why some policies work in some places, while failing in others.

The bibliography volume of the three-volume East Looks West: East European Travel Writing in Europe collates travel writing published in book form by east Europeans travelling in Europe from ca. 1550 to 2000. It is intended as a fundamental research tool, collecting together travel writings within each national/linguistic tradition, and enabling comparative analysis of such material. It fills an important gap in the existing reference literature, both in western and east European languages, and will be of use to those working in the growing fields of comparative travel writing, regional and national identities, and postcolonialism. These texts exist in surprisingly large numbers, and include writings of high literary quality as well as of historical interest, but they have been relatively little studied as a genre. Much of this material is rare and difficult to find, even in national libraries. As a result, there are few bibliographical surveys of the literature of east European travel and self-representation, and none that are region-wide or comparative in scope. This is the third volume of a three-part set of East Looks West, Vol. 1 - An Anthology of East European Travel Writing on Europe; and Vol. 2 - A Comparative Introduction to East European Travel Writing on Europe.

This second book in the Seraffyn cruising series begins with their arrival on the southwest coast of England where they coasted eastward, stopping where fancy held them, where good friends were made, to winter at Pooole, and work to pay for th enext leg of their voyage - toward the Baltic. Denmark, Sweden, Finland were full of welcoming and interesting people and an almost invisible bureacracy. But things were definitely different when they reached Poland were armed guards watched while the poeple greeted them with flowers, fruits and sweets. Their foray behind the Iron Curtain of the 1970's introduced them to some of the people who lead the Solidarity Movement, the force that eventually toppled the Soviet Union. You'll be right on board as they weather a fierce mast-under broach in a Baltic gale and through the wintery North Seas. Here is a feast for the fantiasies of stay-at-homes and a warm account of just two years of the lives of two people who have lived in a wide adventurous world for more than four decades. Their motto -- Go Small, Go Simple, Go Now has encouraged thousands of other sailors to take the plunge. And this book is an entertaining instruction manual on how to live a rich life on very little money. "Lin Pardey has, in her deceptively simple and fresh-faced style, told the story of an unusual and appealing marriage partnership, a speical way of life. Yachtsmen will enjoy the technical description of the problems of maneuvering in the tight harbours and unmapped channels...the perils of heavy seas in a small boat. But what is remarkable is that she can draw a nonsailor into these special subjects and make them as comprehensible and absorbing to a landlubber as they would be to someone about to set out on the same itinerary in a small boat of his own."
