Johann Herbeck (1831–77) was a major musical figure in Vienna in the third quarter of the nineteenth century. He was, at various points in his career, conductor of the Wiener Männergesang-Verein, conductor of the Singverein, musical director of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, musical director of the Court Chapel, and director of the Court Opera. Herbeck joined the Wiener Männergesang-Verein in 1852, served as its conductor from 1856 to 1866, and continued as honorary conductor until his early death. During this time, he composed over a hundred works for men’s chorus. The pieces selected for this volume display Herbeck’s mastery of the musical idioms of his time.

Johann Herbeck (1831-77) joined the Wiener Männergesang-Verein in 1852, rose to the position of conductor in 1856, and continued as honorary conductor until his early death. During this time, he composed over a hundred works for men's chorus, both a cappella and accompanied, most of which were settings of German lyric poetry. The thirty-six compositions in this edition, amounting to one-half of his output for unaccompanied men's chorus, have been selected to illustrate his full command of a variety of styles and forms over his career of twenty-five years. Herbeck wrote for a chorus in four parts (TTBB), augmented in some pieces by solo voices. His works range from charming folk-like settings in strophic form and diatonic harmony, to dramatic expressions of the text in a chromatic idiom cast in modified-strophic and through-composed designs. The edition includes a biography of the composer and an evaluation of his works in this genre.

Nineteenth-century Germany saw an expansion of choral music in a secular context, bringing about changes not only in the nature of the organizations but also in the character of the music. Often depicted in history books as the age of the Lied, the early nineteenth century was also the age of the Chorgesang, creating a demand for music for social gatherings. Amateur choruses and partsinging reached their peak of popularity in nineteenth-century Germany. Gesangvereinen: mixed voice choirs) soon broke into segregated choirs known as Liedertafeln: male voice choirs) and Frauenchoren: female voice choirs). These segregated choirs became a phenomenon and established themselves throughout middle-class Germany and the surrounding German-speaking regions, resulting in an abundance of compositions from every composer of significance and amateurs alike. Robert Schumann spent just over five years in Dresden from 1844-50. It is during this period that his interest in unaccompanied choral music is most apparent. In 1847, he became director of the Dresdner Liedertafel and a year later he founded his own Verein für Chorgesang. His work with these two organizations resulted in a prolific collection of partsongs for mixed voices, male voices, and female voices -- music that even today continues to be unfairly dismissed. After examining the history of the Gesangverein and its gendered counterparts in Dresden and Schumann's work within the traditions, a textual and musical comparison of Schumann's music for mixed choirs and his works for male and female voices will follow in an attempt to bring his partsongs back to the Schumann literature and, more importantly, back to private and public performance.

This edition presents a selection of Johann Herbeck’s sacred choral works with instrumental accompaniment representing his association with important Austrian organizations and institutions. Texts in Latin and German are featured, along with both mixed and men’s choruses. The earliest examples represent Herbeck’s basic musical ability at the age of fifteen as a student at the Heiligenkreuz Abbey in Lower Austria (two settings of “Tantum ergo,” 1847) and his greater competence just a few years later as a member of the Church of the Piarists in Vienna (“De profundis,” 1851). Only five years later, his two lengthy works for men’s chorus and military brass band, which he conducted in his debut as director of the Wiener Männergesang-Verein (“Psalm: Der Herr ist mein Licht” and “Te Deum,” 1856), exhibited mature musical mastery. The same level of competence is evident in his works for mixed chorus that he performed upon being named founding conductor of the Viennese Singverein (“Sperent in te,” 1858) and before and after becoming the imperial Hofkapellmeister (“Adoro te,” 1864; “In ecclesiis,” 1867).

A Library Journal Starred Review (March 2024) praises the book as a "remarkable resource that will please both musical professionals and amateurs, along with teachers and their students, and conductors and singers.” Throughout the ages, people have wanted to sing in a communal context. This desire apparently stems from a deeply rooted human instinct. Consequently, choral performance historically has often been related to human rituals and ceremonies, especially rites of a religious nature. Historical Dictionary of Choral Music, Second Edition contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has more than 1,300 cross-referenced entries on composers, conductors, choral ensembles, choral genres, and choral repertoire. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about choral music.
