The five tombs dealt with in this book were explored between 2009 and 2017 by the Leiden-Turin Expedition in the New Kingdom necropolis of Saqqara. All of them can be described as minor tombs, constructed wherever some space was still available in the cemetery between the major monuments of 18th Dynasty date. Some of them were clearly built against the exterior walls of these previous monuments, whereas their unusual plans show how the builders had to adapt to the cramped conditions in the cemetery. The five tombs vary in date from the very end of the 18th Dynasty to well into the Ramesside period. The most important one was built for Ry, an army officer who must have served under general (later Pharaoh) Horemheb. The rediscovery of his tomb finally enables us to understand the provenance of a whole series of reliefs now in the Berlin Museum and elsewhere. The set of five also comprises two tombs of priests in the temple of Ptah, the Memphite town god. Both Khay and Tatia served in the sanctuary as carrier of the divine barque during processions, combining this office with other jobs: chief royal gardener in the case of Khay, and chief of goldsmiths for Tatia. The latter was a contemporary of Pharaoh Ramesses II, whereas Khay seems to have lived slightly earlier. The tomb of Samut is a very humble affair consisting of a rare four-sided stela standing next to a simple burial shaft. The owner was a simple stone-mason or necropolis workman, and the presence of his funerary monument in what used to be an elite cemetery comes as a surprise. Less informative is the fifth tomb of this series, which is no more than an unfinished and anepigraphic limestone chapel with a now inaccessible shaft in front.

"Iniuia, a high official under King Tutankhamun, started his career as Scribe of the Treasury of the Lord of the Two Lands in Memphis. Next he became overseer of the cattle of Amun and High Steward of Memphis, His tomb, situated just south of the tomb of General Horemheb, was excavated in 1993 by the Joint Expedition of the Egypt Exploration Society and the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden. There are two chapels, one of which is decorated with painted scenes showing Iniuia and his family officiated before the gods of the beyond. They are the finest wall-paintings found to date in the New Kingdom necropolis at Saqqara. The walls of the other chapel are covered with pained reliefs in a style which is reminiscent of the art of Amarna. The scenes show Iniuia performing various activities in his capacity of a high official of the king. The chapel has a pyramid, one of the best preserved examples of its kind discovered in Saqqara up to now. The book contains chapters on the architecture of the tomb, on the decoration of both chapels including reliefs, other monuments and objects from Iniuia's tomb but now in museum collections, such as the anthropoid sarcophagus on Iniuia in the Musée du Louvre. This Element provides a new evaluation of burial customs in New Kingdom Egypt, from about 1550 to 1077 BC, with an emphasis on burials of the wider population. It also covers the regions then under Egyptian control: the Southern Levant and the area of Nubia as far as the Fourth Cataract. The inclusion of foreign countries provides insights not only into the interaction between the centre of the empire and its conquered regions, but also concerning what is typically Egyptian and to what extent the conquered regions were culturally influenced. It can be shown that burials in Lower Nubia closely follow those in Egypt. In the southern Levant, by contrast, cemeteries of the period often yield numerous Egyptian objects, but burial customs in general do not follow those in Egypt.

Given the abundance of funerary artifacts that have been found within the sands of Egypt, it sometimes seems as though the Ancient Egyptians were more concerned with the matters of the afterlife than they were with matters of the life they experienced from day to day. This is underscored most prominently by the pyramids, which have captured the world's imagination for centuries. The pyramids of Egypt are such recognizable symbols of antiquity that for millennia, people have made assumptions about what they are and why they exist, without full consideration of the various meanings these ancient symbolic structures have had over the centuries. Generations have viewed them as symbols of a lost past, which in turn is often portrayed as a world full of romance and mystery. This verbal meaning has become associated with the structures through the tourism industry, where intrigue obviously boosts ticket sales. In fact, the Egyptian pyramids are so old that they were also drawing tourists even in ancient times. In antiquity, the Great Pyramid of Giza was listed as one of Seven Ancient Wonders of the World, and it is the only one still surviving today. While the image that usually comes to mind is of the magnificent pyramids of Giza, there are many other pyramid fields in Egypt, and the one at Saqqara is the oldest and largest. It was the site for pyramids built by at least 11 pharaohs, along with subsidiary pyramids for their queens. In addition to having the most pyramids of any pyramid field in Egypt, Saqqara contains hundreds if not thousands of smaller tombs. Saqqara is located less than 10 miles south of Cairo on the west bank of the River Nile and runs about 3.75 miles on its north-south axis. The site is generally broken down into the region of North Saqqara and South Saqqara, since there are clusters of monuments on each end, but there are some interesting features in the middle portion as well. While the Step Pyramid of Djoser is by far the most famous monument at the site, Saqqara is a rich network of pyramids, temples, and tombs dating from the first dynasty of Egypt all the way to Greco-Roman times, an impressive span of more than 2,500 years. Indeed, Egyptologists have only uncovered a small fraction of the remains. When the pharaohs weren't busy with the pyramids at Saqqara and elsewhere, one of their most used sites is the Valley of the Kings, a royal necropolis located on the west bank of the Nile at Thebes. Here, pharaohs of the New Kingdom Period were buried in elaborate, treasure-filled tombs that were cut deep into the cliffs that walled the Nile Valley. In many of the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, intricate reliefs were painted on the walls that depicted the sun god and the dead king on their nightly journey through the underworld, which was known in Egyptian as the Duat (Wilkinson 2003, 82). These scenes, which vary slightly from tomb to tomb, are known collectively by modern scholars as The Book of Gates because they depict the sun god's journey through 12 gates or pylons, one for each hour of the night. Funerary rituals and the cult of the dead are classics of research in religious studies, especially for ancient Egypt. Still, we know relatively little about how people interacted in daily life at the city of Memphis and its Saqqara necropolis in the late second millennium BCE. By focussing on lived ancient religion, we can see that the social and religious strategies employed by the individuals at Saqqara are not just means on the way to religious, post-mortem salvation, nor is their self-representation simply intended to manifest social status. On the contrary, the religious practices at Saqqara show in their complex spatiality a wide spectrum of options to configure sociality before and after one's own death. The analytical distinction between religion and other forms of human practices and sociality illuminates the range of cultural practices and how people selected, modified, or even avoided certain religious practices. As a result, pre-funerary, funerary and practices of the subsequent mortuary cults, in close connection with religious practices directed towards other ancestors and deities, allow the formation of imagined and functioning reminiscence clusters as central social groups at Saqqara, creating a heuristic model applicable also to other contexts.
