One mother’s fight to support her son and change a broken system In his early twenties, Mindy Greiling’s son, Jim, was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder after experiencing delusions that demanded he kill his mother. At the time, and for more than a decade after, Greiling was a Minnesota state legislator who struggled, along with her husband, to navigate and improve the state’s inadequate mental health system. Fix What You Can is an illuminating and frank account of caring for a person with a mental illness, told by a parent and advocate. Greiling describes challenges shared by many families, ranging from the practical (medication compliance, housing, employment) to the heartbreaking—suicide attempts, victimization, and illicit drug use. Greiling confronts the reality that some people with serious mental illness may be dangerous and reminds us that medication works—if taken. The book chronicles her efforts to pass legislation to address problems in the mental health system, including obstacles to parental access to information and insufficient funding for care and research. It also recounts Greiling’s painful memories of her grandmother, who was confined in an institution for twenty-three years—recollections that strengthen her determination that Jim’s treatment be more humane. Written with her son’s cooperation, Fix What You Can offers hard-won perspective, practical advice, and useful resources through a brave and personal story that takes the long view of what success means when coping with mental illness.

This book is for you. You who have been living in pain, fenced in by fear, surviving but not really living. You who are exhausted searching for the one thing that will make it all better. You who have tried self-help courses, therapy, medication, changing relationships, reading piles of books, changing living situations, haircuts, eating plans, getting a pet, distractions, exercise, yoga, staying in bed all day, sleeping more, sleeping less, detoxing, smoothies, journaling, talking about it, not talking about it, being social, sitting in solitude, long baths, long drives, vision boards, workshops, crying on the kitchen floor, screaming in the woods, changing jobs. This is for you who have tried it all...and yet nothing has worked. Nothing has taken away the feelings. Nothing has stopped the mean thoughts from coming. Nothing has soothed the self-loathing and shame. Nothing has quieted the anxiety and panic. Nothing has lifted the weight of depression off of your chest. Nothing has set you free from the cycle of pain, struggle, hope, and disappointment. That's what this book is here to help you with, dear one. Just one more book. Just one more try. There are things that most of us are never taught about how to deal with being human. “A superbly entertaining read.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Will win over teens.” —School Library Journal (starred review) A teen boy’s world gets turned upside-down when a zoo of exotic animals takes over his small town in this wickedly funny, heartbreakingly honest novel that’s perfect for fans of David Arnold. In Makersville, Indiana, people know all about Ronney—he’s from that mixed-race family with the dad who tried to kill himself, the pill-popping mom, and the genius kid sister. If having a family like that wasn’t bad enough, the local eccentric at the edge of town decided one night to open up all the cages of his exotic zoo—lions, cheetahs, tigers—and then shoot himself dead. Go figure. Even more proof that you can’t trust adults to do the right thing. Overnight, news crews, gun control supporters, and gun rights advocates descend on Makersville, bringing around-the-clock news coverage, rallies, and anti-rallies with them. With his parents checked out, Ronney is left tending to his sister’s mounting fears of roaming lions, stopping his best friend from going on a suburban safari, and shaking loose a lonely boy who follows Ronney wherever he goes. Can Ronney figure out a way to hold it together as all his worlds fall apart? From acclaimed author Crystal Chan comes an incisive tale of love, loyalty, and the great leaps we take to protect the people and places we love most.

You Can T Fix What You Can T See An Eye Opening Toolkit To Cultivate Gender Harmony In Business written by Karen Cornwell and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-02 with Transportation categories.

In the past century, women have gained the right to own land, to vote, to have equal access to job listings, to purchase the birth control pill, to get a credit card in their own name, and to fight in combat. However, one thing has remained unchanged: our unequal workplace. But why are so many people blind to the issue? In You Can't Fix What You Can't See, tech guru Karen Cornwell offers a fascinating narrative that explains how we got here and why it's invisible to some. After spending many years in the world of technology, she made a stark discovery: men simply don't "see" the constant battle that women face each and every day. If they did, Cornwell asserts, they would be determined to help fix the inequality. You Can't Fix What You Can't See provides a framework to understand some of the key differences between the way men and women think to bring new meaning to your experiences (both past and present). It will give you the power to "see" differently, to interpret actions, behavior, and conversations through a new and more powerful lens. For business owners, it explains how to leverage diversity to drive innovation, boost engagement, and business performance. Find the tools and motivation you need to pursue change so that our next generation inherits a better, more inclusive workplace. Reviews (on the back cover): "A fresh, insightful look at an increasingly important topic. The information conveyed in this highly readable book taught me a lot I didn't know, including some things I knew perfectly well before I read the book -- except, it turns out, I was wrong." -- Steve Kerr, Sr. Advisor to Goldman Sachs, former Chief Learning Officer for Goldman and GE."Karen asks: Why, after all this time and effort, is it still so hard for women to lead business? The answer pulls a thread that unravels a giant knot of global business culture. Gender relations is just a part. Using her own story, and dogged research and thinking, Cornwell gets us to a better answer -- which makes this a very valuable book." -- Art Kleiner, editor-in-chief of PwC's management magazine strategy+business, and coauthor of The Wise Advocate"Gender equity is essential for business success - and in You Can't Fix What You Can't See, Karen Cornwell provides a powerful toolkit to achieve it." - Joanne Lipman, Author of That's What She Said, CNBC Contributor and former Editor in Chief of USA TodayYou Can't Fix What You Can't See illuminates the dynamics of gender inside companies to help us better understand what's really going on. More importantly, it offers tools to cultivate greater gender harmony in business. -- Dr. Tasha Eurich, New York Times best-selling author of Insight

How to find guilt-free time for what you really want to do, and why it matters Do you feel like you’re always busy, even as your to-do list continues to grow? Do you think you can’t keep up as it is, let alone add another thing to your plate? An award-winning journalist, avid reader and new mom, Karma Brown dreamed of writing her first novel. But between diapers and tight deadlines, how could she? Like so many of us, she felt stretched taut and hyper-scheduled, her time a commodity over which she had lost control. For Brown, the answer to this problem was to rise earlier every day and use that time to write. Although she experienced missteps along the way, after committing to her alarm clock and an online community of early risers, she completed a debut novel that became a national bestseller. In The 4% Fix, Karma Brown reveals the latest research about time management and goal-setting and shares strategies that have worked for her as well as for others. Refreshingly, her jargon-free approach doesn’t include time-tracking spreadsheets, tips on how to squeeze in yoga exercises while cooking dinner, or methods that add bulk to those never-ending lists. How will you use this one hour—only 4% of your day—to change your life?
