Flight From Fallibility written by Henry Perkinson and has been published by Praeger this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-10-30 with History categories.

Perkinson provides an original historical interpretation that shows how our intellectual, political, economic, and social institutions emerged out of and are based upon the acceptance of human fallibility. However, ever since Plato, theorists have tried to flee from human fallibility in futile quests for certain knowledge, for legitimate government, for a just economy, and for a morality with a rational foundation. These theorists ignore the fact that people in the West, by accepting their fallibility and relying on their experience, have actually constructed critical intellectual institutions that advance knowledge without justification, critical political institutions that lack legitimacy but create stable polities, critical economic institutions that promote wealth that is not based on the pursuit of self-interest, and critical social institutions that establish morality that does not have a rational foundation. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, the triumph of theory over experience threatened to destroy those critical institutions. A provocative analysis that will be of interest to scholars, students, and researchers involved with world civilization and sociopolitical theory.

The Vulnerable Self written by Avery D. Weisman and has been published by Da Capo Press, Incorporated this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-08-21 with Psychology categories.

We are often inclined to seek the assistance of professional authorities during a time of crisis, such as a conflict of conscience, anxiety and impaired self-esteem, inability to feel part of a complex and confusing world, or the troubling insecurity engendered by our own fallible coping strategies. Finding easy answers to challenging questions and problems is not an effective way to alleviate physical, spiritual, or psychological distress. The Vulnerable Self: Confronting the Ultimate Questions is a courageous book about the quality of human existence as it relates to the significance of suffering and the value of being alive. Dr. Avery Weisman, an esteemed psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, compassionately articulates our courageous and sometimes skeptical search for an authentic self. He contends that a major obstacle is a person's propensity to suffer needlessly, caused by a failure to recognize and deal objectively with underlying fundamental questions, which Dr. Weisman labels "metaproblems". These include, in particular, the meaning of meaning; the justification of physical and spiritual deterioration; the need for morale and courage; and the motivations behind inevitable negotiations with our mortality. Dr. Weisman empathetically points out the universality of vulnerability, and how we can confront and understand the problems that haunt and undermine our existence. With rare wisdom and awareness of the traumas of the human condition, he thoughtfully characterizes the reader as a "pilgrim" whose existential search is likely to bring about isolation from the conventional values of society. The pilgrim's solitary journey begins when he or she is ready to take the initial steps ofsurrendering entrenched patterns of denial and self-deception by realizing that despair and the inability to cope are not inevitable but submerged motivations. The Vulnerable Self is a unique and inspiring work which offers true and authentic insight to lay readers of all spiritual persuasions, as well as to psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists, social workers, nurses, members of the clergy, and gerontologists.

Automated Low Altitude Air Delivery written by Johann C. Dauer and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-02 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book investigates Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) with a payload capacity of one metric ton for transportation. The authors provide a large variety of perspectives–from economics to technical realization. With the focus on such heavy-lift cargo UAS, the authors consider recently established methods for approval and certification, which they expect to be disruptive for unmanned aviation. In particular, the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) and its impact on the presented technological solutions and operational concepts are studied. Starting with the assumption of an operation over sparsely populated areas and below common air traffic, diverse measures to further reduce operational risks are proposed. Operational concepts derived from logistics use-cases set the context for an in-depth analysis including aircraft and system design, safe autonomy as well as airspace integration and datalinks. Results from simulations and technology demonstrations are presented as a proof of concept for solutions proposed in this book.

Few recent events in British Columbia have seized the public mind like the 2006 sinking of the BC Ferries passenger vessel Queen of the North. Across Canada, it was one of the top news stories of the year. In BC it has attained the status of nautical legend. Ten years later, questions are still being asked. How did a ship that sailed the same course thousands of times fall victim to such an inexplicable error? Was the bridge crew fooling around? Why doesn't anybody in the know come forward and tell the truth? Nobody knew the ship, the crew and the circumstances that fateful March night better than the Queen of the North's long-serving captain, Colin Henthorne, and in this book he finally tells his story. The basic facts are beyond dispute. Just after midnight on March 22, 2006, the Queen of the North—carrying 101 passengers—struck an underwater ledge off Gil Island, 135 kilometres south of Prince Rupert. The impact tore open the ship's bottom and ripped out the propellers. In less than an hour, it sank 427 metres to the bottom of Wright Sound. Despite the crew's skilled evacuation, two passengers went missing and have never been found. Helmswoman Karen Briker was fired. Fourth Mate Karl Lilgert was charged with criminal negligence causing death and sentenced to four years in prison. Captain Henthorne, who was not on watch at the time of the grounding, fought to keep his job and lost. It took him over six years to recover his career. On the tenth anniversary of the tragedy, Captain Henthorne recalls with accuracy and detail that ill-fated voyage and all its terrible repercussions. The Queen of the North Disaster: The Captain's Story dispels rumours about what really happened that night, revealing a fascinating inside look at a modern marine disaster.
