Excerpt from Flood Field and Forest I really must beg, sir, I began; but somehow his manner overawed me, as it were, into listening. I felt like the wedding-guest in the presence of the Ancient Mariner. He went on m the same tone, without noticing me, or even taking his pipe out of his mouth. Excerpt from The Forest It is a glimpse of the human heart, seen like the blue sea off soundings (which has puzzled, and worse, our landsmen critics) with an ugly and awful fact of human nature ever and anon surging up to the surface, like a monster of the deep, and showing its dark form for a moment in the leaping sun-light, then disappearing to seek its native depths. It makes you dizzy the unsteady motion, the sun dancing in the firmament, the masts describing segments of cir cles in the sky, the good ship heeled over, and almost laid on her beam ends, under the press of her cloud-like canvass, and threatening every moment to take in a flood over her bows, and the sight of these sea monsters sporting in the brine? Yet out of these Visions and per ceptions of nature, (our own abysmal nature in a turmoil, ) and the struggle to maintain the balance of the soul, spring Virtues and a purity of conscience of which the world has but a faint idea. Excerpt from Grazing and Floods: A Study of Conditions in the Manti National Forest, Utah As the contest between the sheepmen and the cattlemen, and be tween rival sheepmen became more severe, the carrying capacity of the range rapidly diminished, and more travel on the part of the grazing stock became necessary to secure enough feed. The result was that, between 1888 and 1905, the Wasatch Range, from Thistle to Salina, was a vast dust bed, grazed, trampled, and burned to the utmost. The timber cover was reduced, the brush thinned, the weeds and grass cropped to the roots, and such sod as existed was broken and worn. The basins at the head of the canyons suffered most, relatively, because they contained the best feed for sheep and were less broken in topography and more easily accessible. Their scanty timber cover, however, made them particularly liable to removal of the soil by wind action wherever the surface cover was broken through and dry powdered earth exposed. These high mountain pastures, therefore, received not only the most abuse, but have been proportionately longer in recovering from its effects. In March, 1902, a large area was withdrawn from entry' for the Manti National Forest, and on May 29, 1903, President Roosevelt created the larger part of the present Forest. Subsequently additions were made, mainly at the northern end. Upon beginning administration of the new Forest the action of the Land Office was prompt and vigorous. On August 18, 1903, the Commissioner of the Land Office ordered all sheep removed from the western slope of the mountains. This order was carried into effect at the beginning' of the following grazing season. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Woodlanders and Field Folk: Sketches of Wild Life in Britain The pretty things move on, stepping quietly through the trees. They are tailless, and the large White patch on the rump is very distinct in the moonlight. Suddenly something startles the leading buck. He stands for a moment motionless in the silver light that oods the open aisle between the dark columns of the pines. His head is uplifted; his delicate ears are alert; his intelligent eyes are bright with atten tion. Then he and his whole family break into a trot which is a perfect picture of going, and so they disappear down the ride of the forest, and the summer night is emptied of their wild, timid grace.
