La toponymie du département du Vaucluse a donné une grande variété de noms inspirés par la végétation et par les animaux, qui témoignent des relations étroites qui ont existé entre le milieu et ses habitants. La recherche présentée dans ce livre est ordonnée en deux parties, consacrées respectivement à la flore et à la faune, chacune étant subdivisée de la manière suivante : - un classement par ordre alphabétique des noms répertoriés dans les cadastres du XIXe siècle et dans les cartes topographiques actuelles de l'IGN ; - la synthèse de ces noms, classés selon leur typologie et leur origine linguistique ; - quelques « faux amis » et noms de famille ou sobriquets. Sont recensés et étudiés plus de trois cents noms de végétaux et d'animaux, sauvages ou domestiques. Pour comprendre ces noms et éviter les pièges qu'ils peuvent renfermer, cette étude s'appuie sur l'étymologie et sur l'évolution de ces noms, à partir de leurs formes anciennes et locales, en les plaçant dans leur contexte linguistique.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and related spatial technologies have a new and powerful role to play in archaeological interpretation.
