Excerpt from The Story of Florence The present volume is intended to supply a popular history of the Florentine Republic, in such a form that it can also be used as a guide-book. It has been my endeavour, while keeping within the necessary limits of this series of Me val Towns to point out briefly the most salient features in the story of Florence, to tell again the tale of those of her streets and buildings, and indicate those of her artistic treasures, which are either most intimately connected with that story or most beautiful in themselves. Those who know best what an intensely fascinating and many-sided history that of Florence has been, who hare studied most closely the work and characters of those strange and wonderful personalities who have lived within (and, the case of the greatest, died without) her walls, will best appreciate my difficulty in compressing even a portion of all this wealth and profusion into the narrow bounds enjoined by the aim and scope of this book. Much has necessarily been curtailed over which it would have been tempting to linger, much inevitably omitted which the historian could not have passed over, nor the compiler of a guide-book failed to mention. In what I have selected for treatment and what omitted, I have usually let myself be guided by the remembrance of my own needs when I first commenced to visit Florence and to study her arts and history. 'A marvel of storytelling and a masterclass in the history of the book' WALL STREET JOURNAL The Renaissance in Florence conjures images of beautiful frescoes and elegant buildings - the dazzling handiwork of the city's artists and architects. But equally important were geniuses of another kind: Florence's manuscript hunters, scribes, scholars and booksellers. At a time where all books were made by hand, these people helped imagine a new and enlightened world. At the heart of this activity was a remarkable bookseller: Vespasiano da Bisticci. His books were works of art in their own right, copied by talented scribes and illuminated by the finest miniaturists. With a client list that included popes and royalty, Vespasiano became the 'king of the world's booksellers'. But by 1480 a new invention had appeared: the printed book, and Europe's most prolific merchant of knowledge faced a formidable new challenge. An exploration of the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance that shows us how and why Florence became the center of the revival of Greek and Classical culture Written by a lover of Florence, The Heart of the Renaissance explores the Greek mythology and Christian traditions and legends shown in the great works of art and architecture of the Italian Renaissance. Richard Lloyd provides historical context to the stories of local saints and miraculous works of art, details the lives of the artists and their patrons, and gives precise locations to the city's works of art and notable buildings. Gorgeously illustrated, the book acts as a practical guide for art lovers exploring Florence, paying homage to the splendors of the city, its history, its art, and its architecture.
