Plato insisted that only Philosopher can rule. We may argue to accept it literally, but we must certainly be agree to see it in a broader sense, that only those who love knowledge, who dedicate them self to the truth, whose words and deeds are characterized by wisdom, can creat just and prosperous society. From that point of view, we see how close is the relation between education and power. High quality of education bequeathes great leaders and vice versa. We cant imagine to be rulled by the greedy souls who are only satisfied by wealth, or governed by a tyrant who deemed his rival as mortal enemy whose soul is worth killing. To avoid such catastrophe, we must emphasize educative politics in which politician should be an exemplary model for the youth. Since humans learn in society much longer than their episodes in the schools. Youth learn from television, personal gadget, social media, from words of mouth that continuously expose profanity of politician. In fact, what they see as reality is imprinted more than their semantic memory as in-class lesson. There is no way out, if we want a change, other to keep searching, embracing and flourishing wisdom. What is wisdom? Why it matters? What are its significance in the Holy Quran? What did the Fathers of Education talk about wisdom? And how can we ground those ideas within our society? This book is written to answer those questions as the start of further discussion with the readers.

Wisdom, considered the highest level of enlightenment, has not had a foothold in our education since Plato’s Academy and Aristotle’s Lyceum. Yet it is wisdom that ultimately promotes human flourishing and equips individuals with the sophistication to live life well. Wisdom is especially urgent if leaders and followers are to lead and follow well. Wisdom is more critical and urgent than ever in today’s world. Stories of lack of discernment and sound judgment abound in the news. Comments such as “what were they thinking?” and “why did they do that?” reveal that wisdom is often painfully lacking when it comes to making decisions. The world needs people who judiciously discern and courageously implement innovative decisions at the right time and in the right way. But before wisdom can be adequately taught, it needs to be properly understood. Historically, the study and acquisition of wisdom has been reserved to the philosophical and theological fields of study, often making wisdom appear esoteric, elusive, and mysterious. While relatively recent empirical attempts have led to certain quantifications and qualifications of wisdom, a comprehensive and cohesive model for understanding, teaching, and implementing general wisdom has yet to emerge. Unfortunately, philosophical and theological treatises on wisdom have been overly convoluted or mystical, making wisdom appear elusive for the lay person. The empirical traditions have overanalyzed the concept to make it almost formulaic and uninspiring. This primer merges insights from the philosophical, theological, and empirical traditions to provide a simple model for understanding, acquiring, practicing, and teaching wisdom. This primer is unique is that it uses clear language to walk the readers through representative classical philosophical and religious works and empirical studies in lieu of jargon-filled meditations. As a result, the primer orients readers to think like philosophers, theologians, and social scientists by shepherding them through to the logic of previous works on wisdom. What also sets this work apart is its brevity without compromise to substance. This primer demonstrates that the complicated can be made relatively simple, and that brevity and profound meaning often walk hand in hand. Ideal for emerging and established leaders, this book demonstrates that wisdom inspires confidence, establishes credibility, and helps us successfully navigate complex problems and promote human progress. This primer makes wisdom accessible and provides all soon-to-be, novice, and seasoned leaders with the understanding, dispositions, and skills to be discerning and virtuous people others will want to emulate and follow.

In a time of unprecedented changes globally, Flourishing in the Holistic Classroom offers an educational model that is dynamic, organic, and adaptive. The book offers key principles, dispositions, and practices that holistic educators draw from to create learning environments in which their students can flourish. This book describes learning that is based on a balance of inner and outer ways of knowing, with an emphasis on the inner life or soul of the learner. This is illustrated through accounts of running an arts camp using the inquiry process and experiences with teacher candidates. A key principle of holistic education is connection, which is explored through experiential examples such as connections between learners and each other, the teacher, and their subject of study. The role that mindfulness practice and teacher presence plays in the classroom, as well as working with fear and vulnerability are addressed through detailed narratives. The breadth of the author’s experience including being an early years teacher, a director of programs and exhibits in a children’s museum, and working with pre-service teachers is woven throughout the book. Reflections from former teacher candidates highlight the influence that holistic pedagogy has on learners. The book concludes with an invitation to the reader to embrace a holistic, integrative approach to education, which creates fertile ground for student flourishing. Flourishing in the Holistic Classroom is intended to support teachers, administrators, academics, pre-service teachers and graduate students. Praise for Flourishing in the Holistic Classroom: "Heartfelt, authentic, soulful! Lisa Marie Tucker’s Flourishing in the Holistic Classroom is a gift to all educators. Drawing on her lengthy career as an educator in various roles, Lisa draws on her personal and professional experiences. Her use of the nautilus shell creates a profound holistic image that connects heart, mind and spirit where personal cosmologies are valued. Her work is timely as we emerge from challenging times and seek to (re)situate and (re)connect ourselves to each other and our planet in a post-pandemic world. Her lived journey resonates and inspires, as we, the reader, moves through each chapter. Drawing on the wisdom of ancestral roots, Lisa explores what makes us human in profound ways." Marni Binder Associate Director, Academic Leadership Associate Professor, Ryerson University "I loved this book! Flourishing in the Holistic Classroom by Lisa Tucker is a must-read for any teacher who is looking to make education meaningful, engaging, and relevant to students’ lives. It is highly readable and full of practical examples and applications for teachers at all grade levels. It is also a wonderfully inspiring text for professors working in teacher preparation programs. I felt like I was having a conversation with a master teacher - one who truly understands the really important qualities that teachers can cultivate in their lives and work. I appreciated the way substantive theory was integrated seamlessly into her own personal narrative. Using stories, she brings her Nautilus model of holistic teaching to life, creating an intimacy with the reader that engages your mind and spirit." Sam Crowell Professor Emeritus, California State University Founder, MA in Holistic and Integrative Education Author, Emergent Teaching: A Path of Significance, Creativity and Transformation "Lisa Invites us to imagine, enact and embody wholeheartedly our life as more than surviving - she wants us to flourish in the classroom as learners, no matter if we are wearing a teacher or student hat. To do this we think of ourselves as a whole person whereby heart, mind, body and spirit are embraced. This is what holistic education is. In this book we are taken on a journey and as Lisa says 'teaching is a complex profession and in order for true exploration and deep learning to occur, a healthy, caring, and sustainable learning community must be developed'." Beginning with a robust view of human nature, they build a case for a decidedly Christian view of education that still rightfully takes its place within the marketplace of public education.

This book explores the interconnection of theological education and Christian scholarship, cultural and theological hermeneutics, pedagogy and community knowledge, democracy and citizenship. Yet, the three major disciplines or discourses covered in this work include multicultural education, theology, and hermeneutics through the lens of human flourishing and the concept of the good life. From this angle, this project is written from three different methods and approaches that intersect with each other: a theology of contextualization, a hermeneutics of interculturality, and a pedagogy of cultural literacy and transformative community knowledge. The book advances the idea that theological education should be the starting point to foster candid conversations about the importance of democracy and human rights, civic engagement and the political life, inclusion and diversity, and pluralism and difference in our multicultural society. The book uses the tools of multicultural education and cultural knowledge to enhance democracy and promote fundamental human virtues that would sustain the good life and human flourishing in the world—in the Aristotelian sense and in the Socratic idea of local and world citizenship. Finally, this text offers an alternative vision to contemporary theological education, to deconstruct the white, male, and Eurocentric narratives of theological education and Christian scholarship.
