Proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at sqrt(s) = 7 and 8 TeV are studied using the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector. The measurement and improvements to the arrival time of particles to the muon system of CMS are detailed. The timing is used to associate the particle with the correct proton-proton crossing and to classify the particle. Additionally, four analyses are presented that use timing and ionization energy loss to search for the production of long-lived charged particles predicted in many theories of new physics. The searches are sensitive to a variety of signatures, including the possibility that the particles will only be detectable during part of their passage through the CMS detector. Limits are placed on the production of long-lived gluinos, stops, staus, and multiply-charged particles. The limits are the most stringent in the world to date.

In this dissertation, a search for New Physics is presented in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV. This collision data was collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider located in Geneva, Switzerland in 2015 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb[superscript -1]. The search analyzes events with zero leptons and large hadronic activity. The data is divided into search regions of jet multiplicity, bottom quark tagged jet multiplicity, missing transverse momentum, and scalar sum of jet transverse momenta. The observed event count in the search regions are found to be in agreement within the standard model expectation. Thus, the results are interpreted in the context of simplified supersymmetric models of gluino pair production leading to a significant improvement in the exclusion limits on the possible mass of the gluino and neutralino.

Measurements of two-particle angular correlations between unidentified charged particles and [phi]-mesons are shown over a wide pseudorapidity range ([delta] [eta] 2) in pPb collisions. The data, collected during 2013 pPb run at a nucleon-nucleon center-ofmass energy of 5.02 TeV with the CMS detector, corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of aproximately 35nb-1. [Phi]-mesons are reconstructed via their hadronic decay channel, [phi] -- K+K-, for high multiplicity events. The observed two-particle long range correlations are quantified by the second-order Fourier coefficients (v2) as a function of transverse momentum. The v2 of [phi]-mesons is compared to that of other identified particles, to study the mass ordering and quark number scaling effects in measurements of elliptic flow.

This thesis first presents a detailed study of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Cathode Strip Chamber track stubs used to build muon tracks in the first layer of filtering, done in hardware, of the data. We study the spatial and angular resolutions of the track stubs with respect to the reconstructed hits using the full granularity data. We then move to a general description of a new technology, Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM), which is to be used in a near-future upgrade to the system. The characterization and calibration of the front-end electronics of the GEMs is discussed in detail. It is demonstrated that the noise of the electronics is sufficiently low to allow high efficiency operation of the technology with the first prototype GEM detector for the new subsystem. We then discuss the phenomenology of sphaleron-induced transition in proton-proton collisions. A new Monte Carlo generator is built to study this phenomenology in detail. We then perform a search analysis of the $35.9~\text{fb}^{-1}$ of data collected by the CMS detector in 2016. We set the first experimental upper limit on sphaleron production in proton-proton collisions.

This thesis provides a comprehensive view of the physics of charmed hadrons in high-energy proton-proton and heavy-ion collisions. Given their large masses, charm quarks are produced in the early stage of a heavy-ion collision and they subsequently experience the full system evolution probing the colour-deconfined medium called quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in such collisions. In this thesis, the mechanisms of charm-quark in-medium energy loss and hadronisation are discussed via the measurements of the production of charm mesons with (Ds+) and without (D+) strange-quark content in different colliding systems, using data collected by the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. The participation of the charm quark and its possible thermalisation in the QGP are studied via measurements of azimuthal anisotropies in the production of D+ mesons. Finally, the prospects for future measurements with the upgraded ALICE experimental apparatus and with more refined machine learning techniques are presented.

Abstract: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a recently-activated proton-proton collider operating at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is one of two general-purpose collider-detectors centered at one of the interaction points of the LHC. A measurement of the PW boson production cross-section and mass is presented to test the performance of the CMS detector in early (70 nb^-1) LHC data and to test theoretical predictions at this never-before-experienced energy regime. The cross-section measurement uses standard event counting techniques, while the mass measurement is performed using fitting of the analytical differential cross-section formula to the transverse mass spectrum from selected W to muon and muon neutrino events. The W production cross-section is measured to be [9,013 +/- 540 (stat.) +/- 552 (sys.) +/- 991 (lumi.)] pb, consistent with theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant. The mass of the W is measured to be [80.07 +/- 0.64 (stat.) +/- 0.48 (sys.)] GeV/c^2, consistent with previous experimental measurements.

This book mainly focuses on the study of photon + 3 jets final state in Proton-Proton Collisions at √s = 7TeV, searching for patterns of two (or more) distinct hard scatterings in the same collision, i.e the so-called Double Parton Scattering (DPS). A new method by using Monte Carlo generators was performed and provides higher order corrections to the description of the Single Parton Scattering (SPS) background. Further it is investigated whether additional contributions from DPS can improve the agreement between the measured data and the Monte Carlo predictions. The current theoretical uncertainties related to the SPS background are found to be larger than expectation. At the same time a rich set of DPS-sensitive measurements is reported for possible further interpretation.

This book addresses one of the most intriguing mysteries of our universe: the nature of dark matter. The results presented here mark a significant and substantial contribution to the search for new physics, in particular for new particles that couple to dark matter. The first analysis presented is a search for heavy new particles that decay into pairs of hadronic jets (dijets). This pioneering analysis explores unprecedented dijet invariant masses, reaching nearly 7 TeV, and sets constraints on several important new physics models. The two subsequent analyses focus on the difficult low dijet mass region, down to 200 GeV, and employ a novel technique to efficiently gather low-mass dijet events. The results of these analyses transcend the long-standing constraints on dark matter mediator particles set by several existing experiments.

ABSTRACT: This dissertation describes the full details of 2 studies of Z0 bosons performed using the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider of proton on proton collisions with center of mass energy of 7TeV. The first study searches for physics beyond the Standard Model by looking for an excess in production of Z0 bosons by examining the Z0pT spectrum. As no excess is found, limits on new physics models are presented as a function of mass and other free parameters. The second study focuses on a precision measurement of the Z0pT distribution, and is compared to theoretical calculations for the purposes of testing high order QCD calculations in addition to probing the predictions of various tunes of the underlying event.
