Many geologists have an equivocal attitude to fluid movements within the crust and the associated changes in the chemical and physical properties of crustal rocks. The controversies earlier this centuary between the "soaks" and the "pontiffs" memorably summarised by H. H. Read (1957) in The Granite Controversy have largely been resolved. Few would now advocate the formation of large granitic bodies by in situ transformation of pre-existing crust as the result of the passage of ichors without the formation of a granitic melt. To many geochemists fluid transport and metasomatism have become slightly suspect processes which at the most locally disturb the primary geochemical and isotopic signatures. While there is common agreement that there are marked differences in the composition of the lower and upper crust, the role of fluid movement as one of the controls of this differentiation is often neglected in favour of suggested primary differences in the composition of igneous rocks emplaced at different depths. Selective fluid transport however provides many geologists with their livelyhood. Without the secondary concentration of commercially important elements by fluids within the crust the mining industry, geological science and human activities based on their products would be very different.

Previously published as part of the 1993 subscription to the journals: Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, Volume 79, Nos. 1/2, Tectonophysics, Volume 223, Nos. 1/2, Chemical Geology, Volume 108, Nos. 1/4, Sedimentary Geology, Volume 86, Nos. 1/2, Global and Planetary Change, Volume 8, Nos. 1/2, Marine Geology, Volume 113, Nos. 1/2, Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, Volume 103, Nos. 1/2 This is a selection of keynote papers that were presented at the Interdisciplinary Union Symposia of the 7th conference of the European Union of Geosciences (EUG) from 4 to 8 April 1993 in Strasbourg. It contains both chapters reporting on forefront research as well as review articles. Since the interdisciplinary approach in the earth sciences is increasingly important, the scope of the book is wide with contributions from geology, geophysics, geochemistry and adjacent fields in biology. In a similar spirit, problems dealing with the earth's mantle as well as topics related to shallower levels in the earth and coupled earth-ocean-atmosphere systems are part of this volume. As such it provides a survey of recent advances in a wide range of fields of the earth sciences.

This book presents the results of the Third International Symposium on Observation of the Continental Crust through Drilling held in Mora and Orsa, Sweden, September 7 - 10, 1987. Volume 2 reviews new and general information on geology, geophysics, rock mechanics, geochemistry, drilling techniques and drilling problems in very deep holes of the FRG, USA and the Soviet Union. The proceedings are invaluable for earth scientists as well as for exploiters of geoenergy and other natural resources in the crust. Volume 1 summarizes the results of the Deep Gas Project in the Siljan impact structure, Sweden, including papers dealing with general aspects of astroblemes. It is of interest to all researchers working in the drilling industry and those interested in the problem of "deep gas."

This festschrift, compiled from the symposium held in honor of W.F. Brace, is a timely overview of fault mechanics and transport properties of rock. State-of-the-art research is presented by internationally recognized experts, who highlight developments in this contemporary area of study subsequent to Bill Brace's pioneering work.Key Features* The strength of brittle rocks* The effects of stress and stress-induced damage on physical properties of rock* Permeability and fluid flow in rocks* The strength of rocks and tectonic processes
