"A history of the understudied but highly inventive Fluxus collective founded in NYC in the late 1950s/early 1960s. Fluxus was an unruly, endlessly shifting gang of performers, conceptual writers, musicians, and installation artists who wanted to integrate life into art using found and ordinary objects and processes (like cooking and shaving). Fluxus first arose in the United States under the leadership of George Maciunas and quickly spread to Europe. Artists from Claus Oldenberg to Allan Kaprow to Dick Higgins to Allison Knowles to Joseph Beuys to Gerhard Richter to Nam June Paik to Yoko Ono to Robert Filliou all participated in Fluxus at some point. Unlike other books about Fluxus, this one explores not just the movement itself but also how it figures the transition from modernism to postmodernism, and the historical origins of experimental art practices of the present"--

Feltness written by Stephanie Springgay and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-09-23 with Education categories.

Stephanie Springgay’s concept of feltness—which emerges from affect theory, queer and feminist theory, and feminist conceptions of more-than-human entanglements—is a set of intimate practices of creating art based on touch, affect, relationality, love, and responsibility. In this book, she explores how feltness is a radical pedagogy that can be practiced with diverse publics, including children, who are often left out of conversations about who can learn in radical ways. Springgay examines the results of a decade-long project in which researchers, artists, students, and teachers participated in events in North American elementary, secondary, and postsecondary institutions. In projects that ranged from children learning to be critics and artists to university students experimenting with building “a public” through art, participants blended participatory art creation with academic research to address social justice issues. Springgay shows how feltness can redefine who is imagined to be capable of complex feeling, experiential learning, embodied practice, social engagement, and intimate care. In this way, feltness fosters learning that disrupts and defamiliarizes schools and institutions, knowledge systems, values, and the legibility of art and research.

Into Performance written by Midori Yoshimoto and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-04-28 with Art categories.

The 1960s was a time of incredible freedom and exploration in the art world, particularly in New York City, which witnessed the explosion of New Music, Happenings, Fluxus, New Dance, pop art, and minimalist art. Also notable during this period, although often overlooked, is the inordinate amount of revolutionary art that was created by women. Into Performance fills a critical gap in both American and Japanese art history as it brings to light the historical significance of five women artists—Yoko Ono, Yayoi Kusama, Takako Saito, Mieko Shiomi, and Shigeko Kubota. Unusually courageous and self-determined, they were among the first Japanese women to leave their country—and its male-dominated, conservative art world—to explore the artistic possibilities in New York. They not only benefited from the New York art scene, however, they played a major role in the development of international performance and intermedia art by bridging avant-garde movements in Tokyo and New York. This book traces the pioneering work of these five women artists and the socio-cultural issues that shaped their careers. Into Performance also explores the transformation of these artists' lifestyle from traditionally confined Japanese women to internationally active artists. Yoshimoto demonstrates how their work paved the way for younger Japanese women artists who continue to seek opportunities in the West today.

Tiré du site Internet de Primary Information: "George Maciunas' Diagram of Historical Development of Fluxus and Other 4 Dimentional, Aural, Optic, Olfactory, Epithelial and Tactile Art Forms, was released in 1979 in the Swedish magazine Kalejdoskop (Issue 3). This issue of the magazine consisted of three versions of Fluxus, one being Maciunas' historical diagram and the others being two essays (one in English and one in Swedish) summarizing the movement by Mats B. on the poster's sleeve. Primary Information's edition recreates all three as they originally appeared in 1979. Maciunas' Diagram of Historical Development outlines the development of Fluxus while situating it within a wider cultural and art historical spectrum, sometimes to humorous effect. The timeline begins with Roman circuses, medieval fairs, and Futurist theater and moves into Dada, Surrealism, and Vaudeville before addressing developing genres like Earth Art and Happenings and finally ending with FLUXGAMES in 1973. Maciunas' vast outline dedicates a great deal of space to Fluxus activities, detailing both well-known and obscure performances, publications, and artists from 1961 through 1973. This diagram is one of several versions that Maciunas made that traces the influences that he viewed as fundamental to Fluxus' development and operation. As the movement's founder, figurehead, and graphic designer, Maciunas was responsible for Fluxus' strong graphic identity, which is evident here, and one can also see Diagram of Historical Development through the lens of Maciunas' Learning Machines, which consisted of diagrams, maps, and lists that prized non-linearity and correlative overlap between various historical fields of knowledge. George Maciunas (1931-1978) was a Lithuanian artist, designer, and publisher. He coined the term "Fluxus" in 1961 to describe a network of artists, composers, and performers working in and in-between the fields of music, theater, and art. Maciunas is widely regarded as the founder and leader of Fluxus, and he was an unrelenting organizer and spokesman for the movement. Maciunas also ran Flux Editions, a publishing house that produced artists' books, a newspaper, and editions by the likes of Yoko Ono, George Brecht, Alison Knowles, La Monte Young, and many others. Maciunas' work as publisher was fundamental to the development of artists' books in the 1960s and beyond. Most notable are the publications' materials (Flux Editions rarely looked like traditional books and consisted of everything from playing cards to violins and concrete) and their conceptual framework (many of which relied on the reader to complete or perform the works). His ideas for Fluxus were not limited to publications and performances ; Maciunas' larger vision included Fluxshops where the public could buy affordable works directly from artists ; Fluxhouse Cooperatives, which were affordable live/works spaces ; and a Fluxus Colony on Ginger Island in the Caribbean."

Musical Migration And Imperial New York written by Brigid Cohen and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-05 with History categories.

"Through archival work and storytelling synthesis, Music Migration and Imperial New York revises, subverts, and supplements many inherited narratives about experimental music and arts in postwar New York into a sweeping new whole. From the urban street-level via music clubs and arts institutions to the world-making routes of global migration and exchange, this book seeks to redraw the geographies of experimental art and so to reveal the imperial dynamics, as well as profoundly racialized and gendered power relations, that shaped and continue to shape the discourses and practices of modern music in the United States. Beginning with the material conditions of power that structured the cityscape of New York in the early Cold War years (ca. 1957 to 1963), Brigid Cohen's book encompasses a considerably wider range of people and practices than is usual in studies of the music of this period. It looks at a range of artistic practices (concert music, electronic music, jazz, performance art) and actors (Varèse, Mingus, Yoko Ono, and Fluxus founder George Maciunas) as they experimented with new modes of creativity"--

This innovative volume is the first to address the conservation of contemporary art incorporating biological materials such as plants, foods, bodily fluids, or genetically engineered organisms. Eggshells, flowers, onion peels, sponge cake, dried bread, breast milk, bacteria, living organisms—these are just a few of the biological materials that contemporary artists are using to make art. But how can works made from such perishable ingredients be preserved? And what logistical, ethical, and conceptual dilemmas might be posed by doing so? Because they are prone to rapid decay, even complete disappearance, biological materials used in art pose a range of unique conservation challenges. This groundbreaking book probes the issues associated with displaying, collecting, and preserving these unique works of art. The twenty-four papers from the conference present a range of case studies, prominently featuring artists’ perspectives, as well as conceptual discussions, thereby affording a comprehensive and richly detailed overview of current thinking and practices on this topic. Living Matter is the first publication to explore broadly the role of biological materials in the creative process and present a variety of possible approaches to their preservation. The free online edition of this open-access publication is available at www.getty.edu/publications/living-matter/ and includes videos and zoomable illustrations. Also available are free PDF, EPUB, and Kindle/MOBI downloads of the book.

Dick Higgins and his Something Else Press epitomized the riotous art of the '60s There are few art-world figures as influential--and as little known--as Dick Higgins (1938-98), cofounder of Fluxus, "polyartist," poet, scholar, theorist, composer, performer and, not least, the publisher of the legendary Something Else Press. In 1965 he restored the term "intermedia" to the English language, giving it new dimension to recognize the dissolution of boundaries between traditional modes of art-making and the open field for new forms that cannot be compartmentalized. His own contributions to intermedia are many--as a participant and instigator of happenings, as writer and composer straddling traditional and vanguard forms, among others--but it was Something Else Press (1963-74) that redefined how "the book" could inhabit that energized, in-between space. Something Else Press was as much a critical statement and radical experiment as it was a collection of books by some of the most luminary artists and writers of the 20th century: Gertrude Stein, John Cage, Ray Johnson, Dieter Roth, Bern Porter, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Emmett Williams, Robert Filliou, and George Brecht, among many others. Along with his Great Bear Pamphlet series and the Something Else newsletter, Higgins exploited and subverted conventional book production and marketing strategies to get unconventional and avant-garde works into the hands of new and often unsuspecting readers. Edited by Granary Books publisher Steve Clay and Fluxus artist Ken Friedman, this judiciously curated and indispensable compendium of essays, theoretical writings and narrative prose dives deep into the ever-influential ideas that Higgins explored in theory and practice. Clay and Friedman have chosen works that illuminate Higgins' voracious intellectual appetite, encyclopedic body of knowledge and playful yet rigorous experimentation in a selection that includes many writings long out of print or difficult to find.
