There are times in your life when you start to wonder what it's all about. With me, I already had plans to up sticks and go, and when one of my neighbours died in a fire, I decided that was it... a new life in New Zealand beckoned. And so began my adventure. It's funny how things work out... how one thing leads to another... and before I knew it, I was broke, stoned and flying by the seat of my pants around that lush green country on the far side of the world.

By the Seat of My Pants is Dean Smith's story of his life as a flying cadet in WWI, an airmail pilot in the 1920's and, lastly, as the lead aviator in Admiral Byrd's 1928 Antarctic expedition. Told in a self-deprecating style with a matter of fact sense of humor, it is an engaging read from start to finish. Passages describe airmail runs heading West with no maps or runways available, and Smith's interesting take on the Byrd Expedition is a version of events not in the official records. Indeed, Smith claims his log-diary, which mysteriously went missing once the party returned stateside, was most likely stolen by Byrd himself lest it conflict with his narrative of the expedition.

“The story of one of the most heroic fighter aces of the Second World War . . . has been brought to life in this gripping new book.” —Lancashire Living Magazine Air Commodore Peter Malam “Pete” Brothers CBE, DSO, DFC, and Bar (1917-2008) was one of the most highly praised pilots of the Second World War. Decorated extensively, he secured a total of 16 “kills” over the course of the conflict, with 10 of these occurring during the Battle of Britain. Pivotal moments in his career include the time, in August 1940, when his flight encountered around a hundred enemy aircraft, including Messerschmitt 110s; he led the flight in attack against them, and soon found himself in a stalled position, out of which he spun, only to be confronted by a Dornier 215, which he shot down, before later destroying a Messerschmitt 109. Scores of these kind of risky maneuvers and winning victories punctuated a career defined by great courage, leadership and initiative in the face of fierce opposition. This new and engaging biography profiles a pilot who, until now, hasn’t been the subject of such a thorough book-length study. The story of his career is incredibly entertaining, featuring a number of hair-raising episodes, and is sure to appeal to fans of aviation history as well as the more general reader seeking out an action-packed biography offering fresh insights into one of the most pivotal conflicts of the twentieth century. “An engaging story of one of The Few . . . This is a book that entertains, inspires, moves, amuses, surprises—what more could any reader ask for.” —FIRE Project

This book tells of a young couple who struggled against the odds to introduce a seaplane service to New Zealand’s Marlborough Sounds, and to members of the travelling public between the South and North Islands. Locals looked askance at what was a totally new concept to the area, but the aeroplanes soon became accepted, especially after their lifesaving use in emergencies was recognised by people in the far-flung reaches of the outer Sounds. Russell Smith, owner and pilot, writes of years of incredible happenings, some adventurous, many humorous, and some just plain harrowing. One account bordering on surreal, occurred at a boat ramp where he was surrounded by nine policemen, accused of being a UFO from outer space! Unbelievable, but true, as is the whole book.

W. G. Bonvouloir received greetings from the government in August 1941. He said to his wife, Nancy, "Don't worry. I'm thirty-six, married with three children, and I'm overweight. They won't take me." Surprise! They have raised the weight limit for thirty-six year olds. "You're in. Congratulations, Captain." So begins the saga of his WWII experience. He always maintained that "Those who stand and wait also serve." This exemplified our mom. She stood and waited and raised three young girls, served with the GI Joe wives and kept the home fires burning. Dad wasn't present physically, but he was always there. Mom made sure we knew that.
