Flying Navy is the first book published by the Fleet Air Arm Museum of New Zealand. The author, David Allison, is the curator of that museum. Seven hundred and sixty men graduated as trained pilots or observers (navigators), some became TAGs (telegraphist airgunners). Many died in action - hit by flak or enemy fighters, some died on carrier-deck crashes, others were lost at sea, executed by Japanese captors, or flew into mountains at night. In the two world wars 179 young Kiwis died in Fleet Air Arm service. In this book their flying careers are detailed with their photographs printed alongside. The book opens with an account of the original Royal Navy Air Service (RNAS) and its successor the Fleet Air Arm (FAA) of the Royal Navy. Also detailed are prisoner-of-war experiences, escapes from war camps and a New Zealander's early involvement in the air aftermath of the atomic bombs that brought the Japanese war to an end. The book ends with carrier and aircraft data. Throughout the book photographs illustrate this history.

The book begins with a series of vignettes in the period of the mid-1950s when the U.S. Navy introduced swept wing, jet-powered fighters into the aircraft carrier navy, flying from straight-deck carriers whose flight decks were made of teak wood. The thread of stories follows the author's career in chronological sequence, in various venues throughout the Navy. There are accounts from his first carrier deployment to the western Pacific, followed by events as a weapons delivery instructor at the predecessor to TOPGUN in El Centro, California. Some of his experiences as a Navy pilot are recorded in a section about Patuxent River, Maryland, the Navy's test center. Additional episodes include an unforgettable wing-walking flight. flying Japanese Zeros in the movie TORA!TORA!TORA! and the author's subsequent tour of duty in Pentagon conducting proficiency flights from our nation's capital. There are also accounts of combat missions over Vietnam and the author's experiences in both wing commander jobs, flying the F-4 Phantom II and the F-14 Tomcat. The last story is about his two flights, as a fifty-two year old Admiral, in the controversial F-20 Tigershark. These vignettes combine humor, hair-raising excitement and tragedy. Rear Admiral Paul T. Gillcrist, a U.S. Navy fighter pilot, served also as a test pilot and weapons delivery instructor, and actively flew from sixteen aircraft carriers for over twenty-seven years. The author writes with authority as a former fighter squadron commanding officer who recorded 167 combat missions over Vietnam flying the F-8 Crusader. Subsequently, he commanded a carrier air wing and finally served, the rank of Rear Admiral, as the wing commander for all pacific Fleet fighter squadrons. His pilot's logbook includes over 6,000 hours, in seventy-one different types of aircraft from 1952 to 1981. He retired in 1985 as Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations(air Warfare). Seized by an urge to learn flying Robert Alexander Winston would not be put off by the high fees charged by the private firms; he decided to join the nascent Naval Air Service in 1935. In this fast paced, witty and engaging memoir he describes his time spent as a Naval Cadet in learning to fly at the NAS Pensacola. He passed his carrier qualification aboard USS Saratoga, before being assigned to Fighting Squadron 6 flying off the USS Enterprise. His four term hitch in the Navy ended in 1939 and he entered the Naval Reserve. Robert A. Winston was born in Washington, Indiana, in 1907 and graduated from Indiana University. He worked for The New York Times and The New York News for five years before starting flight training with the navy in 1935. He flew in fighting squadrons on both coasts and as an instructor at Pensacola, and he wrote about his initial aviation training in Dive Bomber, published in 1939 when Winston held the rank of lieutenant. In his second book, Aces Wild, he chronicled his experiences in Europe during 1939-40 as a test pilot accompanying a consignment of fighters destined for Finland. Back on active duty in the United States, he served as a flight instructor, then in the public relations office in Washington, D.C. After the attack on Pearl Harbor he was assigned to combat duty in the Pacific, which he recounts in Fighting Squadron, published in 1946 when Winston was a commander. At the end of the war he was serving on Admiral Nimitz’s staff on Guam. From there he moved to Stockholm, where he served as the naval air attaché.
