Aprender a leer en una lengua extranjera es un reto al que se enfrentan miles de niñas y niños en los colegios de educación primaria. En muchos casos, entran en contacto con la lengua escrita cuando aún están consolidando la lectura en la lengua materna. Esto desencadena unos procesos lingüísticos y cognitivos, afectados por el entorno sociocultural, que el docente ha de conocer para poder ayudar a su alumnado. Dado el amplio espectro de conocimientos que abarca el tema, este libro no pretende ser una revisión de todas las variables de índole lingüística, cognitiva, social o afectiva que entran en juego, sino que aspira a identificar y analizar algunos elementos esenciales en la lectura temprana en inglés como lengua extranjera: qué teorías existen y son aplicables en este contexto; de qué componentes específicos está compuesto el proceso lector; cuáles son los principales factores que influyen en su aprendizaje y desarrollo y qué perfiles lectores se pueden encontrar en función de las dificultades lectoras. Para el lector más curioso, se ofrece un capítulo con análisis estadísticos que le permiten ser testigo del proceso de investigación que hay detrás de algunos estudios sobre la lectura en inglés como lengua extranjera. Esos mismos análisis han ayudado a reducir el número de pruebas necesarias para identificar dificultades lectoras, y permiten al docente predecir qué probabilidad tienen los niños y niñas de primaria de desarrollar problemas lectores que afecten a su rendimiento académico en la lengua materna y en lenguas adicionales. Finalmente, se hace una selección de propuestas didácticas que sirvan de marco para desarrollar intervenciones educativas adaptadas a las necesidades de los jóvenes lectores de educación primaria.

Low levels of student achievement and school quality persist in developing countries. This document reviews the importance of school quality in increasing literacy and influencing economic growth in developing nations. Improvements are discussed in terms of: (1) school quality and economic development; (2) defining school quality; (3) improving school quality; and (4) increasing school efficiency. Evidence suggests that low school quality accounts for low literacy levels and achievement among children in developing nations and that little progress has occurred in improving school quality in the poorest countries since 1970. Definitions of school quality should focus on characteristics that influence student achievement and on efforts that encourage more efficient management and effective local school staff. Little research has been conducted about the influence of teaching practices and classroom organization on achievement levels, but access to textbooks and writing materials and teacher quality consistently influence student achievement. Methods for studying the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of management practices in terms of increased school quality are reviewed, and investments that can be reduced without causing detrimental effects are identified.
