This collection of articles poses the question: What can gender history add to the traditional narrative of Irish history? How can it help us to understand the ways in which power operated in and flowed through Irish society? It is premised on the assumption that men and women are actors in the creation of their society, influenced by the ideology of the period, but also challenging and resisting the assumptions and beliefs of their era. The articles included in this collection are far-ranging and thematically diverse, united by the common theme of gender. While women play a dominant role in its pages, it makes visible the power and presence of men. Sometimes implicit, sometimes explicit, the history written on these pages is a history of the ways in which women and men constructed, negotiated and made visible the roles, ideas and representations that governed their particular society. In so doing, it provides an alternative reading to the traditional narrative of Irish history. This book focuses mainly on the modern period and includes two articles from outside of Ireland which provides a comparative focus. It also includes a theoretical introductory section on the nature of gender history from three leading Irish historians.

This book examines the role of history teaching in Irish secondary schools in the period 1922-72. It assesses what objectives were the most important in history teaching and what interests school history was designed to serve. The emphasis is on the political, cultural, social and economic factors that determined the content of the history curriculum and its development. The primary focus is on the politics and policy of history teaching, including the respective contributions of church and state to the formulation of the history programmes. It is argued that a particular view of Ireland’s past as a Gaelic, Catholic-nationalist one informed the ideas of policy makers and thus provided the basis of state education policy, and history teaching specifically. The conclusion drawn is that history teaching was used by elite interest groups, namely the state and the church, in the service of their own interests. It was used to justify the state’s existence and employed as an instrument of religious education. History was exploited in the pursuit of the objectives of the cultural revival movement, being used to legitimise the restoration of Irish as a spoken language.

The history essays in this volume explore how expressions of identityâ "particularly religious and political identityâ "shaped the experiences of Irish people from the early seventeenth to the early twentieth centuries, both in Ireland and abroad. They consist of an examination of the role played by Bonamargy Friary in the Antrim MacDonnellsâ (TM) presentation of their familyâ (TM)s status in the early seventeenth century; an exploration of the important role played by Irish courtiers during the years of Charles IIâ (TM)s Continental exile; a discussion of tensions between Irish Presbyterians and Anglicans in the 1720s and 1730s, with a particular focus on James Arbuckleâ (TM)s Hibernicusâ (TM)s Letters; an overview of the fraught relations between Irish Presbyterians and their Anglican neighbours on the frontier of Britainâ (TM)s North American colonies in the middle decades of the eighteenth century; an illustration of the masculinist rhetoric employed by Ulster Unionists during the Home Rule crisis from 1912 to 1914; a discussion of the anti-treaty IRAâ (TM)s use of arson attacks in three Munster counties during the Irish Civil War; and, finally, an examination of the impact of W. P. Nicholsonâ (TM)s evangelical crusade on Ulster Protestant society in the early 1920s. The essays in the literature section of this collection represent an eclectic range of interests in Irish literature and Irish literary history. Several of the essays focus on the way in which seminal events in Irish history, in particular the Easter Rising, have been imagined and re-imagined over time; they offer new insight into literary responses to, and representations of, those events and explore fresh contexts for thinking about the same. Others take up the question of literary genre and Irish national identity, while a number of contributors explore intertextuality and influence in twentieth-century Irish writing, with a special focus on Yeatsian and Joycean afterlives. The usefulness of thinking about literary texts alongside other forms of cultural expression is also examined, in particular the interactions of Irish literature and music. Irish English is both the oldest overseas variety of English and, thanks to its co-existence with Irish Gaelic, one of the longest-documented examples of a contact-influenced language variety. The dual aspects of substratal influence and dialectal conservatism, together with the spread of this variety in the Irish diaspora and its use in literature, provide the main impetus for research into Irish English. This volume brings together twelve original papers which use a variety of methods to examine these aspects of English in Ireland. Following a historical introduction which looks critically at received views of language diffusion in Ireland, three papers directly address the role of the Irish-language substrate in Irish English. Detailed studies also describe non-standard syntax in Belfast, systems of dental and alveolar phonemic contrast, contemporary sound change in Galway, Irish English prosody, dialect word lists, and the uses of Irish English, notably Ulster Scots, in contemporary literature. The North American perspective investigates the role of Irish English in Newfoundland, and examines a corpus of 18th-century documents which reflects the language brought to the United States in the early development of American English. Ireland can look back at a very turbulent history. It has a special position in that has been one of the few places not invaded by Roman conquerors. However, it has been invaded by the Vikings and, of course, by the Anglo-Normans who both played an important part in the history of the island. Today, most people think about the Northern Ireland conflict when they think about Ireland. The news concerning Ireland in the 20thcentury was mainly connected with IRA bomb attacks, parades of the Orange Order or peace negotiations. Recently, the decommissioning of weapons by the IRA is in the public eye. However, not only its history makes Ireland a country worth looking at. The language situation of the island is also special. In the Republic of Ireland, the first official language is Irish although it is only spoken as an everyday language by a minority of speakers. In Northern Ireland, English is the first official language with Irish being a minority language. The following paper will focus on Ireland’s history and language situation. In the first part, Ireland’s history from prehistoric times until today will be briefly outlined. The main focus will lie on the 20thcentury until today. The second part of the paper will deal with the language situation of Ireland. The origins and historical development of the Irish language will be described. Irish speaking areas and different dialects of Irish will be mentioned. Furthermore, this paper will look on the situation of the Irish language today. In addition, the paper will deal with Irish English, the form of English used in Ireland. Differences to Standard English concerning pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary will be mentioned.
