This is a book which talks about men’s souls. A special type of soul, a “folk” soul. Through the careful and curious eyes of a tireless traveller, encounters, anecdotes, and fortuitous coincidences present the European folk world in all its beauty and authenticity. A world made of music and musicians, dances and dancers, instruments and luthiers, festivals and enjoyment. But also of a heritage of culture and values which the centennial wisdom of the traditions has entrusted to a modern man ever more separated from the community, from nature, and from himself. In the age of internet, of technological progress, and of globalization, talking about traditions, proverbs, dialects, ancient instruments and popular dances might seem anachronistic. However, the messages within these pages will cause you to reflect on how these timeworn practices are alive and how they can lead man towards a path of enlightenment.

Since the 1960s, there have been two schools of thought on the origins and nature of black consciousness: the adaptive-vitality school and the pathological-pathogenic school. The latter argues that in its divergences from white American norms and values, black American consciousness is nothing more than a pathological form of and reaction to American consciousness, rather than a dual (both African and American) counter hegemonic opposing 'identity-in-differential' (the term is Gayatri Spivak's) to the American one. Proponents of the adaptive-vitality school argue that the divergences are not pathologies but African 'institutional transformations' preserved on the American landscape. The purpose of this work is to understand black consciousness by working out the theoretical and methodological problems from which these two divergent schools are constructed, in order to arrive at a more sociohistorical, rather than racial, understanding of black consciousness. Using a variant of structuration theory to account for the sociohistorical development of black consciousness formation within the American social structure, author Paul Mocombe concludes that black American life is dual and pathological only in relation to a particular interpretive community, the black bourgeoisie or liberal middle class.

The book opens a new field in Slavic folklore and offers scholars material heretofore not readily available in English. The work sheds light also on the Serbian soul and culture. Conceptions of God, restlessness of the folk poet for the transcendental, the deep ontological, cosmic, and theurgic character of the heroes of the Serbian folk epic, man’s destiny, man of culture or man of civilization, are just a few of the topics that the author has concerned himself with in this book.

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was an African American civil rights activist, leader, Pan-Africanist, sociologist, educator, historian, writer, editor, poet, and scholar. The importance of his work to the success of the Civil Rights movement cannot be overestimated. "In the course of his long, turbulent career, W. E. B. Du Bois attempted virtually every possible solution to the problem of twentieth-century racism-- scholarship, propaganda, integration, national self-determination, human rights, cultural and economic separatism, politics, international communism, expatriation, third world solidarity." -David Levering Lewis The Souls of Black Folk propelled Du Bois to the forefront of the Civil Rights movement when it was first published. This hard hitting masterpiece is part essays, part memoir, and part fiction. More than any other book it brought home just how racist and unjust America could be, and demanded that African Americans be granted access to education and equality.
