The purpose of this collection of articles is to map out the gender ideologies found in Finnish folklore and to raise questions about the processes behind their production, interpretation and transformation. Several authors in this study examine the ways in which, through cultural forms of expression and representation, gender has been used in Finland and in Karelia to symbolically organise such categories as the human body, human environment, 'inside' versus 'outside', and 'this world' versus 'other world'.

In Gender and Genre in the Folklore of Middle India, Joyce Burkhalter Flueckiger analyzes six representative Indian folklore genres from a single regional repertoire to show the influence of their intertextual relations on the composition and interpretation of artistic performance. Placing special emphasis on women’s rituals, she looks at the relationship between the framework and organization of indigenous genres and the reception of folklore performance. The regional repertoire under examination presents a strikingly female-centered world. Female performers and characters are active, articulate, and frequently challenge or defy expectations of gender. Men also confound traditional gender roles. Flueckiger includes the translations of two full performance texts of narratives sung by female and male storytellers respectively.

The essays in Women's Folklore, Women's Culture focus on women performers of folklore and on women's genre of folklore. Long ignored, women's folklore is often collaborative and frequently is enacted in the privacy of the domestic sphere. This book provides insights balancing traditional folklore scholarship. All of the authors also explore the relationship between make and female views and worlds. The book begins with the private world of women, performances within the intimacy of family and fields; it then studies women's folklore in the public arena; finally, the book looks at the interrelationships between public and private arenas and between male and female activities. By turning our attention to previously ignored women's realms, these essays provide a new perspective from which to view human culture as a whole and make Women's Folklore, Women's Culture a significant addition to folklore scholarship

Magic rituals and belief were an important part of everyday life in rural Finland, surviving even into this century. Numerous descriptions of Finnish women's magic rituals have been recorded over the past 150 years, yet we actually know little about the unusual world of women's private magic and women's own motivations in performing it. This book focuses on magic rituals practised by and for women, as well as pollution beliefs about women, and explores how these rituals and taboos reveal gender dynamics and symbolism in traditional Finnish culture. By applying anthropological perspectives to the folklore materials, the author provides new insights into concepts of body and pollution, female sexuality, and gender inequality. Many of the original source materials on women's magic rituals are translated into English for the first time here. This book will be of major interest to students and scholars of Finnish folk belief, gender studies, and women's folklore.

Burning dinners, stitching "scandalous" quilts, talking "hard" in the male dominated world of rap music---Feminist Messages interprets such acts as instances of coding, or covert expressions of subversive or disturbing ideas. While coding may be either deliberated or unconscious, it is a common phenomenon in women's stories, art, and daily routines. Because it is essentially ambiguous, coding protects women from potentially dangerous responses from those who might be troubled by their messages.
