In 2003 Kent Annan left behind his prosperous, comfortable upbringing to face the world beyond its gates, where people wear his cast-off clothing and seek comfort from the heat in the long shadow of his homeland. Haiti, apparently, was where God wanted him. Of course, just because God wants you somewhere doesn't mean it's going to be easy. Little did he know how important his work would be. Now, in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, Annan's experience living and working in Haiti has become a powerful resource for those looking to learn more about this amazing country and find out how they can help Haiti rebuild and thrive. In this book you'll enter into Annan's experience traveling and working in Haiti, and ultimately you'll be challenged to follow God into uncharted territory on a path that may lead to your local soup kitchen--or to a Haitian relief settlement. Either way, you'll learn what it means to become vulnerable in order to help others and share the embodied love of Christ. Read Following Jesus Through the Eye of the Needle for a vivid picture of the Haiti Annan knows, the good work happening there through organizations like Haiti Partners, and the ways you can get involved. Whether you go or stay, you'll get a fresh sense of what it means to love God and love our neighbor when love is uncomfortable, even dangerous; to see what happens when God stretches you beyond your borders into his kingdom.

Andrew, the younger brother of Peter, is just one day shy of his sixteenth birthday when he and Peter notice a man with a purposeful stride walking along the coastline. When the stranger asks the boys to follow him, they do, not realizing that they have changed the course of their lives forever. As the boys embark on what will become a three-year journey with Jesus, Andrew struggles to understand the earthly and divine meanings of his teachings. After Jesus recruits Joanna, the wife of Cuza, to leave her husband, children, and possessions and travel with the group, the four set out on the road toward Negev where more eventually join their spiritual pilgrimmage. As Andrew begins to awaken to his true value and relationship with his creator, he witnesses Paul's growth into his role as a teacher of God's Word and finally his death in a Roman prison. The Eye of the Needle is the fictionalized account of Andrew's journey with Jesus as he learns to embrace God's stories, truths, and blessings.

2011 ECPA Book Cover Awards Finalist In the wake of a historic earthquake in the fragile country of Haiti, Kent Annan considers suffering--from the epic to the everyday--as a problem for faith. Less than two weeks after the release of Kent's book about his work with Haiti Partners, he heard the news. Friends trapped under the rubble of buildings. Friends sprinting across the city looking for family. Churches--including one Kent often attended--turned to rubble. Suddenly Kent and his friends were part of an uncomfortable fellowship: people whose faith is shaken by crisis. Taking courage from the psalmists of old and the company of his grieving neighbors, Kent has found that there is solidarity in suffering. Others have followed life to the edge of meaning and have heard God even there, calling for honest faith. Are there questions or realities your faith can't handle? Kent wrote After Shock to help you find out.

Research on “following Jesus” has mostly been done in terms of what Jesus’ followers ought to do. In this unprecedented study, Kim presents “following Jesus” in John’s Gospel through the perspective of what Jesus does for his followers. “Following Jesus” is a journey towards the place where Jesus leads his followers, that is, to a relationship with the Father. It is ultimately participating in the Son’s communion with the Father. Jesus, who was in the bosom of the Father, descended from him and ascends to him, taking his followers with him, so that they may be with him where he is with the Father in glory and love. Kim develops this thesis by examining the term akolouthein (“to follow”) and correlated motifs in John’s Gospel.

Through The Eye Of A Needle written by Peter Brown and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-02 with History categories.

A sweeping intellectual history of the role of wealth in the church in the last days of the Roman Empire Jesus taught his followers that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. Yet by the fall of Rome, the church was becoming rich beyond measure. Through the Eye of a Needle is a sweeping intellectual and social history of the vexing problem of wealth in Christianity in the waning days of the Roman Empire, written by the world's foremost scholar of late antiquity. Peter Brown examines the rise of the church through the lens of money and the challenges it posed to an institution that espoused the virtue of poverty and called avarice the root of all evil. Drawing on the writings of major Christian thinkers such as Augustine, Ambrose, and Jerome, Brown examines the controversies and changing attitudes toward money caused by the influx of new wealth into church coffers, and describes the spectacular acts of divestment by rich donors and their growing influence in an empire beset with crisis. He shows how the use of wealth for the care of the poor competed with older forms of philanthropy deeply rooted in the Roman world, and sheds light on the ordinary people who gave away their money in hopes of treasure in heaven. Through the Eye of a Needle challenges the widely held notion that Christianity's growing wealth sapped Rome of its ability to resist the barbarian invasions, and offers a fresh perspective on the social history of the church in late antiquity.

Just Follow Jesus written by Billy Joseph Stines and has been published by WestBow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-18 with Religion categories.

Who were the men called by Jesus? Among the twelve disciples were two sets of brothers – Peter and Andrew, James and John – and a man named Matthew. If we were selecting individuals to follow Jesus, these men would have never been on our list. But Jesus saw something in them we could never see. Peter, Andrew, James, and John made their livelihood fishing in the Sea of Galilee. Matthew collected taxes for the hated Roman empire. Each was an average man just going about his daily business. But Jesus turned their lives upside down by calling to them, saying, “Follow me.” Just as his call changed their lives, it can change your life, too. Billy Joseph Stines, who served almost forty years at six churches scattered around North and South Carolina, explores why you should listen to the call of Jesus. He also urges readers to stop dismissing those parts of the Bible that do not fit their idea of who God is. Instead of seeking peace through compromise, the goal must be to discover the truth – Jesus Christ.

Reading Jesus written by Vance L. Toivonen and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-04 with Religion categories.

For more than five hundred years, the Bible has been referred to as the Word of God. Yet, even before the Bible was written, there was a Living Word-spoken through prophets and through Jesus of Nazareth - that ultimately echoes through the centuries. Pastor Toivonen relies on his nearly thirty years of preaching as well as studying and interpreting the Bible to inspire others to contemplate how God speaks in the contemporary world and whether God prefers flesh and blood to ink and paper. While sharing his careful examination of how the Bible came to be the Word of God through a very human process and why the Word of God is intended to be living and breathing as opposed to a book, Toivonen offers intriguing insights and commentary that encourages spiritual seekers to embark on a personal journey to answer their own questions about the Bible, its authority, and its trustworthiness. Reading Jesus offers encouragement to anyone ready to consider a deeper and more meaningful relationship with Jesus of Nazareth and apply the Word of God to truly live God's way-today.

The Cornerstone Biblical Commentary series (18 volumes) is the product of nearly 40 scholars, many of whom participated in the creation of the NLT. The contributors to this series, who are well-known and represent a wide spectrum of theological positions within the evangelical community, have built each volume to help pastors, teachers, and students of the Bible understand every thought contained in the Bible. In short, this will be one of the premier resources for those seeking an accessible but fairly high-level discussion of scriptural interpretation. David L. Turner, PhD, is a graduate of Cedarville University, Grace Theological Seminary (ThD), and Hebrew Union College—Jewish Institute of Religion, Cincinnati (MPhil, PhD candidate). He has been professor of New Testament at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary since 1986 and has previously published several articles on the Gospel of Matthew. Darrel L. Bock, PhD (University of Aberdeen), is research professor of New Testament Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. His special fields of study include the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament, Luke—Acts, the historical Jesus, and the integration of theology and culture. Among his most recent publications are Breaking the Da Vinci Code (New York Times best-seller, May 2004), and a two-volume commentary on Luke (Baker).
