Joshua Waters had always vicariously enjoyed the adventures of others from the comfort of his reading chair until an intriguing new neighbor asked him for a simple favor involving a family matter. Unprepared both physically and psychologically, Joshua is plunged into a world which resembles a medieval version of his own world; a place where he believes he can safely experience just a little real adventure. Dealing with a task which has been grossly misrepresented, he finds himself trapped in a land where the acquisition of vital skills and powerful new friends and allies may still prove insufficient to offset the daunting challenges from both the environment and murderous enemies on all sides.

Following the Telegraph Trail is a true story of an outdoor Canadian adventure. In the 1950s, a man in his prime, who was seeing his family responsibilities pile up, created an opportunity to act on a boyhood dream - to trek with simple equipment in the wilderness and survive. After a year of preparation, he and another man, with a similar dream, faced the unknown together on a 400-mile trek that followed the abandoned Telegraph Trail in the wilds of northern British Columbia, before the construction of the Stewart-Cassiar Highway. The two men followed the telegraph line along a narrow route, through an area of varied terrain that included open country, dense bush, river crossings, mountain passes, wild animals, and increasing challenges. Their trek included magnificent scenery, changes in the weather and unexpected developments, taking a total of 7 weeks to reach civilization again. The story is told by the daughter of one of the adventurers, after her father has died. She recreates the story from her dad’s diary, maps, and photographs, complete with imagined dialogue based on the men's characters. Readers can identify with the two men, alone in the wilderness, as they face the challenges of seeking from nature to provide their basic needs of food, water, and shelter. In doing so, they learn some hard lessons about courage, grit, perseverance, self-doubt and friendship, in addition to the value of being prepared for the unknown, as they experience their adventure of following their dreams.

This powerful narrative traces the social, cultural, and political history of the Cherokee Nation during the forty-year period after its members were forcibly removed from the southern Appalachians and resettled in what is now Oklahoma. In this master work, completed just before his death, William McLoughlin not only explains how the Cherokees rebuilt their lives and society, but also recounts their fight to govern themselves as a separate nation within the borders of the United States. Long regarded by whites as one of the 'civilized' tribes, the Cherokees had their own constitution (modeled after that of the United States), elected officials, and legal system. Once re-settled, they attempted to reestablish these institutions and continued their long struggle for self-government under their own laws--an idea that met with bitter opposition from frontier politicians, settlers, ranchers, and business leaders. After an extremely divisive fight within their own nation during the Civil War, Cherokees faced internal political conflicts as well as the destructive impact of an influx of new settlers and the expansion of the railroad. McLoughlin brings the story up to 1880, when the nation's fight for the right to govern itself ended in defeat at the hands of Congress.

Chemical Sciences In The 20th Century written by Carsten Reinhardt and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-09-26 with Science categories.

Chemistry in the last century was characterized by spectacular growth and advances, stimulated by revolutionary theories and experimental breakthroughs. Yet, despite this rapid development, the history of this scientific discipline has achieved only recently the status necessary to understand the effects of chemistry on the scientific and technological culture of the modern world. This book addresses the bridging of boundaries between chemistry and the other "classical" disciplines of science, physics and biology as well as the connections of chemistry to mathematics and technology. Chemical research is represented as an interconnected patchwork of scientific specialties, and this is shown by a mixture of case studies and broader overviews on the history of organic chemistry, theoretical chemistry, nuclear- and cosmochemistry, solid state chemistry, and biotechnology. All of these fields were at the center of the development of twentieth century chemistry, and the authors cover crucial topics such as the emergence of new subdisciplines and research fields, the science-technology relationship, and national styles of scientific work. This monograph represents a unique treasure trove for general historians and historians of science, while also appealing to those interested in the theoretical background and development of modern chemistry.

All the king had ordered them to do was to follow the old map through the Noble Mountains to ensure its accuracy. It should have been a routine undertaking. But confusion builds as the practitioners of magic Veras, Creda, Xyron, and Giever, with the escort Ferren, Joul, Nico, and Aldred, find themselves in an area with its own unfamiliar and sinister sorcery. As they progress through challenges, Creda realizes that her own powers are changing, and their predicament might even be her fault. Worst of all, they begin to see that this sinister magic might be deliberately hindering their progress . . . and intending them harm. If they can’t find some way of dealing with the constant, continuing dangers from the mystical surroundings, the entire kingdom could be threatened.
