50 Foods written by Edward Behr and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-31 with Health & Fitness categories.

With 50 Foods, noted authority Edward Behr has created the definitive guide to the foods every food lover must know. A culinary Baedeker, 50 Foods will delight and inform the connoisseur as well as the novice. Like Behr’s celebrated magazine, The Art of Eating, 50 Foods presents simple, practical information about buying, using, preparing, and enjoying. Behr focuses on aroma, appearance, flavor, and texture to determine what “the best” means for each food. He tells you how to select top quality—signs of freshness and ripeness, best season, top varieties, proper aging. If the way to prepare, serve, or eat something is little known, then he explains it (how to open an oyster, why the best way to cook green beans is boiling, how to clean a whole salted anchovy, when to eat and when to discard the rind of a cheese). Behr also names the most complementary foods and flavors for each of these fifty marvelous foods and the wines that go with them. The fifty selections provide a broad sensory range for the modern gourmet. Most of the foods are raw materials, but some have been fermented or otherwise transformed—into bread, ham, cheese. Six of the fifty are cheeses. As Behr explains, cheese is probably the best food, as wine is the best drink. Behr argues that food tastes more delicious when it is closer to nature. Skilled low technology is almost always superior to high technology. But with scientific insight, the old methods can be refined to achieve more consistent high quality. We can’t always have the best, but with the information in this book we can eat better every day. Knowing good food is part of a complete understanding of the world—part of a full enjoyment of nature, a full experience of the senses, a full life. For the connoisseur at any level, 50 Foods is a beautifully written guide to deliciousness, with color illustrations by Mikel Jaso throughout.

I Like Food Food Tastes Good written by Kara Zuaro and has been published by Hyperion this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04-24 with Cooking categories.

What happens when indie bands hit the road They get hungry! Food writer Kara Zuaro knows a lot of musicians, and she's found they all share one obsession (besides music, of course): eating. Whether theyre on the tour bus reminiscing about meals past or at home in their own kitchens, theyve all got favorite recipes -- and theyre willing to share. This uniquely irresistible cookbook collects contributions from more than 100 artists, including indie icons like the Violent Femmes, Belle & Sebastian, and They Might Be Giants; current favorites like Franz Ferdinand and My Morning Jacket; and up-and-coming acts like Catfish Haven and Voxtrot. Some recipes are inspired by a particular song in the band's repertoire, others are taken from real-life experience. Each one bears the often quirky stamp of its source -- while these are thoroughly tested, cook-from-me recipes, Zuaro has left the musicians wording and instructions intact, which makes for a collection that's as much fun to read as it is to use. For example, from Devendra Banhart's contribution: RIGHT ON!!!!!! here is my favorite recipe for: AFRICANAS RICAS! you shall require! many bananas! a box of graham crackers!!! two eggs!!! SOUR CREAM!! HONEY! You get the idea. Part indie music discovery guide, part foodie fantasy, and all fun, I Like Food, Food Tastes Good is a cookbook for anyone whose iPod is always on.

Slow Food written by Carlo Petrini and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-05-14 with Cooking categories.

Take a breath.... Read slowly. How often in the course and crush of our daily lives do we afford ourselves moments to truly relish-to truly be present in-the act of preparing and eating food? For most of us, our enjoyment of food has fallen victim to the frenetic pace of our lives and to our increasing estrangement, in a complex commercial economy, from the natural processes by which food is grown and produced. Packaged, artificial, and unhealthful, fast food is only the most dramatic example of the degradation of food in our lives, and of the deeper threats to our cultural, political, and environmental well-being. In 1986, Carlo Petrini decided to resist the steady march of fast food and all that it represents when he organized a protest against the building of a McDonald's near the Spanish Steps in Rome. Armed with bowls of penne, Petrini and his supporters spawned a phenomenon. Three years later Petrini founded the International Slow Food Movement, renouncing not only fast food but also the overall pace of the "fast life." Issuing a manifesto, the Movement called for the safeguarding of local economies, the preservation of indigenous gastronomic traditions, and the creation of a new kind of ecologically aware consumerism committed to sustainability. On a practical level, it advocates a return to traditional recipes, locally grown foods and wines, and eating as a social event. Today, with a magazine, Web site, and over 75,000 followers organized into local "convivia," or chapters, Slow Food is poised to revolutionize the way Americans shop for groceries, prepare and consume their meals, and think about food. Slow Food not only recalls the origins, first steps, and international expansion of the movement from the perspective of its founder, it is also a powerful expression of the organization's goal of engendering social reform through the transformation of our attitudes about food and eating. As Newsweek described it, the Slow Food movement has now become the basis for an alternative to the American rat race, the inspiration for "a kinder and gentler capitalism." Linger a while then, with the story of what Alice Waters in her Foreword calls "this Delicious Revolution," and rediscover the pleasures of the good life.

Food sustains life. Since the beginning of time, it has underpinned our existence. Every day, in every country around the world, it continues to do so. While once food comprised the humble gatherings of hunters in caves, today it has been elevated to an obsession, loathed and adored, craved and crammed in equal measure. Some people eat to live, others live to eat. In an age where we consume up to 285 pieces of content just via social media on a daily basis, information needs to be easily accessible, quick to the point and captivating. This is the age of the infographic, where statistics, facts and knowledge are made easily available and understandable. Taste will explore the complex, colourful and at times controversial world of food, through a collection of thought-provoking, stimulating and beautifully-crafted infographics. Accessible and authoritative, it will cover everything you need to know about food – from its origins to its consumption, weird and wonderful traditions, mealtimes and trends – as well as startling, challenging and unusual facts. Our content will have authority and wit, chart history and predict trends, and will be complemented by beautiful naturally styled imagery and fact-packed illustrations. From Christmas lunch to curry, pizza to Pavlova, and bagels to burgers, Taste will inform and inspire. Our readers will be information hungry but time poor. They want to eat good food, they want to know good food, but they want it quickly and they want it now. They want to feel travelled without leaving home. It took love, care and attention to create but will ultimately be consumed in a matter of minutes by an eager foodie. Food is the one global language that always translates.
