Health and healthy food have now become a major challenge, as the food industry puts its economic benefits before the benefits that food can provide. We live in a time of haste, in which processed foods are practically most of the food we can find on supermarket shelves, thus relegating unprocessed, authentic foods to hard-to-get items and often over-priced ones. This book aims to shred a little light on the subject, and make us be able to get healthy food despite the food industry, in the end all consumers have the strength to change all this. - An investigation about food products that can currently be found in big shopping centres This book is the result of and investigation that we’ve carried out with the help of experts in the field and our own personal experiences; in order to look into the products that are sold in supermarkets and big shopping centres. With the results obtained we look for products to substitute those that don’t provide any benefits to the human body or are especially harmful and toxic. As a result: we lost weight and body fat without dieting and without depriving ourselves of any food product; we spend less on weekly food expenses, we are more energetic, have better life quality, can concentrate better, are less tired and don’t suffer from headaches or painful joints. The advantages are enormous, by simply making certain changes in our eating habits and without cutting out anything that’s essential. With this book we share our personal experience, a family of three, who are concerned about their own and their children’s health. We hope to encourage other people to experiment as we have and see the benefits for themselves.

'The School Food Revolution is an important book that deserves success.' Journal of Organic Systems 'A great new book that describes how 'the humble school meal' can be considered as 'a litmus test of... government's political commitment to sustainable development.' Peter Riggs, Director, Forum on Democracy & Trade 'The School Food Revolution should be an inspiration for policy makers and for school heads and school canteen operators.' Tom Vaclavik, President, Organic Retailers Association School food suddenly finds itself at the forefront of contemporary debates about healthy eating, social inclusion, ecological sustainability and local economic development. All around the world it is becoming clear - to experts, parents, educators, practitioners and policy-makers - that the school food service has the potential to deliver multiple dividends that would significantly advance the sustainable development agenda at global, national and local levels. Drawing on new empirical data collected in urban and rural areas of Europe, North America and Africa, this book offers a timely and original contribution to the school food debate by highlighting the potential of creative public procurement - the power of purchase. The book takes a critical look at the alleged benefits of school food reform, such as lower food miles, the creation of markets for local producers and new food education initiatives that empower consumers by nurturing their capacity to eat healthily. To assess the potential of these claims, the book compares a variety of sites involved in the school food revolution - from rural communities committed to the values of 'the local' to global cities such as London, New York and Rome that feed millions of ethnically diverse young people daily. The book also examines the UN's new school feeding programme - the Home Grown Programme - which sees nutritious food as an end in itself as well as a means to meeting the Millennium Development Goals. Overall, the book examines the theory, policy and practice of public food provisioning, offering a comparative perspective on the design and delivery of sustainable school food systems. The cover illustration is by a Roman child. The authors would like to thank the City of Rome (Department for School and Educational Policies) for permission to reproduce it.

God invites you to cast your cares on Him, because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). It is natural to seek first to meet our own needs and the needs of our family members, but God invites us to make an exchange. He invites us to cast our concerns on Him, and He promises to care for us better than we could take care of ourselves. In exchange, He desires for us to take on His concerns, His priorities, and seek His Kingdom first.

'The Challenge of Food Security addresses one of the key development challenges of our time. It examines issues related to food security in a comprehensive manner that covers both theoretical perspectives and policy challenges. It will be a key reference book for anyone interested in issues related to food security.' Philippe Cullet, University of London, UK 'This is a timely book which addresses one of the greatest challenges for international regulation: food security. The book is a comprehensive treatment of various aspects of food security from its origins to the relationship between food security and other values, the role that commodity trading plays in exacerbating food insecurity, the importance of adequate food governance, together with specific food security problems like fish, water and genetic resources. The editors should be congratulated on a stimulating collection of essays that brings together a diverse range of scholars and which sheds real light on the complex dimensions of the food security debate.' Fiona Smith, University College London, UK This timely study addresses the pressing issue of food security through a range of interdisciplinary contributions, providing both scholarly and policy-making perspectives. It sets the discussion on food security within the little-studied context of its international legal and regulatory framework. The expert contributors explore the key issues from a development perspective and through the lens of existing governance and policy systems with a view to articulating how these systems can be made more effective in dealing with the roots of food insecurity. The book considers the root causes of food insecurity before discussing the regulatory challenges inherent in reconciling food production and sustainability to ensure both adequate supply of and equitable access to food, particularly in light of emerging issues such as food price volatility, 'land grabbing' and the need to coordinate the actions of the multitude of actors that influence food policy and regulation. It highlights the need for more equitable, transparent and coherent policy and regulatory approaches to the myriad of issues that make up the food security challenge. This cross-cutting study will appeal to researchers in law, international relations, agricultural science and food systems, as well as to policy makers in government and international organisations that engage with policy and regulation of food security issues. It will also be essential reading for professionals in non-governmental organisations that are interested in development issues in general and food security in particular.

'Take one seven-year-old boy named Freddie and his mother as they face the challenge of turning him from a vegetable-phobic into a boy who will eat and even enjoy some of life's leafier pleasures. Join us as we work through the A to Z of vegetables' are the opening words of a blog started by Charlotte Hume after another dinner table drama involving her seven year old son and peas. She called it the Great Big Vegetable Challenge and opened it to 'all of you parents out there who have tried and succeeded to introduce your offspring to the joys of carrots, peas, lettuce, spinach, asparagus, beetroot, green beans - in fact any vegetable. Any idea gratefully received.' The strategy of the challenge was simple. As Freddie systematically refused nearly every single vegetable, his mother was going to introduce him to the entire alphabet of vegetables cooked in a variety of original and tempting ways and post the results - successes and failures on her blog. And so began a delightful exploration of the world of vegetables. From artichokes to zucchinis, broad beans to yams, every aspect of this family vegetable adventure is lovingly chronicled in Charlotte's book The Great Big Veg Challenge. As well as being highly practical containing over 100 delicious child-friendly recipes, this fully illustrated book is also the funny and touching story of how a mother changed her son's eating habits for good.
