Derived from the author's own survey (the Long island Long-Term Marriage Survey), this book unveils the most important factors contributing to the longevity of marriages. It's based on completed questionnaires from 576 couples, and in-depth follow-up interviews with sixty of these couples, making this the largest survey to date of couples married fifty years or more. The interviews allowed the spouses to tell their life stories (excerpted in the book), and to contrast their marriages to those of younger generations, adding an intergenerational comparative perspective. The author organizes the book around the major life events experienced by her respondents: meeting, courtship, and marriage; having children; conflicts and their resolution; sharing household chores; working spouses; retirement. Throughout, Alford-Cooper has included longer vignettes in which couples tell the stories of their lives together, giving the book a freshness that only first-hand narrative can communicate.

This book is about the outcome of a study that assessed factors that affect long-term marriages (10 or more years, spouses age 30-59 years) in the Maldives. Marriage is an evolving institution that contributes to diversifying the human race. In Islam marriage is a sacred bond that shapes a better society. Recent research on marriage observed that the rate of marriage is declining and the rate of divorce is increasing. For example, in the Maldives for every 2.3 marriages, one marriage ended in divorce. There is no study to date conducted in the Maldives about the factors that may be associated with retaining long-term marriages. Thus, this book aims to explore factors of long-term marriage which could be applied during marital therapy/counseling to aid in couple therapy intervention and future research. The book describes the association between long-term marital factors such as religiosity, spirituality, self-awareness, perception of a long-term marriage, and demographics. The book provides tips for researchers, counselors, and psychologists when handling clients with marital conflicts.

Why Does Marriage Today Seem To Be Such a Far Cry From Paradise?Let's face it. Our culture's version of marriage is not as God designed it to be. With a lot more emphasis on individualism and consumerism, today's married couples tend to lose sight of God's original purpose for marriage--a call for his people to take Jesus' message to the heart of everyday life. Marriage Made in Eden provides a radical alternative to today's view of marriage, giving a glimpse into the historical and cultural aspects that have shaped marriage in America. With this insightful analysis you'll learn how marriage has come to be in the state we now find it and about God's model and purpose for a sacred Christian union.

What is the current state of families? Where are families headed? Where is family scholarship headed? As families face challenges today brought on by events that have changed their perception of the world, there is a need for a clear assessment of what has happened to families in the past and an examination of some data-based theories about what is likely to happen in the future. The Handbook of Contemporary Families explores how families have changed in the last 30 years and speculates about future trends. Editors Marilyn Coleman and Lawrence H. Ganong, along with a multidisciplinary group of contributors, critique the approaches used to study relationships and families while suggesting modern approaches for the new millennium. The Handbook looks at how changes within the contemporary family have been reflected in family law, family education, and family therapy. Features of this Handbook: Examines a diverse array of families and relationships in which people live, including chapters on alternative lifestyles, gay and lesbian relationships, economically distressed families, religion and families, racial and ethnic diversity, a feminist vision for families, older families, and the effect of computers and other technology on family relationships Includes both a historical review and future speculation on the subjects covered in each chapter Interdisciplinary contributors representing a variety of fields such as history, family studies, sociology, law, therapy, social work, psychology, nursing, and human development The Handbook of Contemporary Families is an excellent resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, educators, and practitioners who study and work with families in several disciplines, including Family Science, Human Development and Family Studies, Sociology, Marriage & Family Therapy, and Social Work.

Our parents and grandparents do have sex! There, I’ve said it! Love and Sex: Are we ever too old?!? is an opportunity to revisit the idea that the need for love and sex regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation or marital status is normal and natural. The book is a collage of photos of older couples, cartoons, selected poetry about sexuality and couplehood as well as reviews of books and films that have celebrated late-life love and sexuality. The book is an original way to teach adult children, grandchildren and the current cohorts of aging individuals to understand and accept the sexuality of maturing adults. In so doing, they can help transform the meaning of love and sexuality up to the very limits of life itself.

Many topics within the study of close relationships are relevant to positive psychology, such as love, friendship, social support, and forgiveness. However, very little has been done to specifically connect and thus expand these two interrelated and rapidly growing fields. Positive Psychology of Love fills this void by bringing together the latest research and theory in the field of close relationships from a positive psychology point of view, suggesting how we can have more fulfilling close and intimate relationships and how these relationships may enhance our lives. Each of the chapters focuses on a different aspect of close and intimate relationships as related to positive psychology, such as romantic love, friendship, positive emotions, sexuality, attachment, communication, forgiveness, conflict resolution, self-esteem, relational maintenance, mental health, physical health, and culture. International contributors from a variety of disciplines explore how these areas of close relationships relate to positive psychology, and how close relationships function as an important aspect of our personal health, growth, happiness, and well-being. This unique and fascinating approach will be of interest to researchers, educators, and students in a number of fields including psychology, sociology, counseling, social work, communication, family studies, marriage and family therapy, and nursing.
