Myra Hindley had been imprisoned for almost 3 decades having been convicted along with her co-defendant Ian Brady for the murders of five children, in Manchester during the 1960's. She was about to receive news that her prison sentence was to be that of "natural life" and she invited the author to support her through this difficult period in her sentence. He was invited to join the campaign for her release by the Honourable David Astor, who had been her friend and benefactor throughout much of her time in prison, along with the support of Lord Longford who continued to attract media attention through his belief that she was entirely repentant and a product of Ian Brady's depravity and therefore should be released. It was at the beginning of 1992 that the Cookham Wood prison governor, Christine Ellis, warned that the authors life would never quite be the same again having purchased "the Myra ticket", which entitled him to a roller coaster ride on the campaign trail that fought for her release from jail.
