A major aspect of mathematical training and its benefit to society is the ability to use logic to solve problems. The American Mathematics Competitions have been given for more than fifty years to millions of students. This book considers the basic ideas behind the solutions to the majority of these problems, and presents examples and exercises from past exams to illustrate the concepts. Anyone preparing for the Mathematical Olympiads will find many useful ideas here, but people generally interested in logical problem solving should also find the problems and their solutions stimulating. The book can be used either for self-study or as topic-oriented material and samples of problems for practice exams. Useful reading for anyone who enjoys solving mathematical problems, and equally valuable for educators or parents who have children with mathematical interest and ability.

Mock Exams for Math Olympians (Volume 1) - The Best Tasks from Math Olympiads The present edition aims to achieve in the math Olympians the consolidation of their mathematical skills after successfully solving a group of mock exams containing a variety of carefully selected interesting problems, as well as giving them the confidence to successfully face the exams of any math competition. This educational material will be of great help to all students who participate each year in the main mathematics competitions for elementary and middle school in the United States and abroad; and in a very special way for those who are preparing for the MOEMS contest, whose exams have inspired this edition. Furthermore, the problems included herein are very similar to those proposed in the main elementary and middle school mathematics competitions in the United States such as MOEMS, Math Alpha Contest, Noetic Math Contest, Math Kangaroo in USA, etc. This edition consists of a series of workbooks that bring together a collection of select problems by means of Mock Exams and is aimed at elementary and middle school students. Many of the problems included here have been extracted from Math Olympiads around the world and others have been inspired by them, which will allow the student to prepare by performing simulations of a math competition. Likewise, it has been considered to follow the structure and rules of the exams given in the MOEMS contests (Mathematical Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools) due to its great popularity in the United States and abroad. Furthermore, each Mock Exam contains 5 questions in increasing order of difficulty to be answered in a time not exceeding 30 minutes, where each correct answer is worth one point and the incorrect answer zero points. The main topics covered by the questions include: sets of numbers, arithmetic operations, math and logic puzzles, divisibility, prime numbers, GCF - LCM, fractions, statistics and probability, geometry in the plane and solids. The exams included in each volume have been divided into two categories, namely, elementary school and middle school, each of them with a total of ten Mock Exams. In this first volume the exams from 1 to 10 are included. The students may only have: pencil, eraser and sharpener. Blank sheets will not be required as the workbook has been designed so that the students can solve each question in the same workbook. No calculators, rulers, graph paper, or any other aid can be used. In addition, the students will find the answers to each question at the end of the book, so that they can verify their results obtained. Finally, the indispensable support of parents or an academic tutor is recommended so that they can guide the student in case of doubts, and the evaluation is carried out with the greatest objectivity and responsibility possible.

BETHANY MACDONALD HAS TRAINED SIX LONG YEARS FOR THIS MOMENT. SHE'LL TRY TO SOLVE FIVE QUESTIONS IN THREE HOURS, FOR ONE IMPROBABLE DREAM. THE DREAM OF REPRESENTING HER COUNTRY, AND BECOMING A MATH OLYMPIAN. As a small-town girl in Nova Scotia bullied for liking numbers more than boys, and lacking the encouragement of her unsupportive single mother who frowns at her daughter's unrealistic ambition, Bethany's road to the International Math Olympiad has been marked by numerous challenges. Through persistence, perseverance, and the support of innovative mentors who inspire her with a love of learning, Bethany confronts these challenges and develops the creativity and confidence to reach her potential. In training to become a world-champion "mathlete", Bethany discovers the heart of mathematics - a subject that's not about memorizing formulas, but rather about problem-solving and detecting patterns to uncover truth, as well as learning how to apply the deep and unexpected connections of mathematics to every aspect of her life, including athletics, spirituality, and environmental sustainability. Mathematical Olympiads for Beginning Students - The Zeroth Book for Elementary Schoolers is an initiative that arises at the suggestion of parents and teachers to want to count on a practical study material for the training of future Math Olympians who currently have nascent math skills. This problem book is a collection of 400 select problems with five levels of difficulty, covering the complete training program for beginners, and is especially aimed at elementary school children between 6 and 11 years old with little or no experience in Math Olympiads who seek to strengthen their math skills and become a Math Olympian. It may even be of great help for beginners in math, for whom it may be their first book on the subject. Each level consists of a set of 10 exams, where each exam consists of 8 problems inspired by problems from Math Olympiads around the world. Further, an answer sheet is included after each exam and at the end of the book the student will find the answers to all the problems proposed in it.It is worth mentioning that this problem book is a comprehensive preparation material, that is, anyone who begins with this training program is recommended to start from the first level without skipping any of them, in this way the students will experience the gradual improvement of their math skills, evidencing their progress continuously. Likewise, students are suggested to carry out the following training scheme: between 6 and 7 years old, up to level 2; between 7 and 8 years, up to level 3; between 8 and 9 years old, up to level 4; between 9 and 11 years old, up to level 5. It is important to clarify that what is suggested above is only referential as it is the minimum required for those ages; however, students are always encouraged to continually overcome themselves and face increasingly higher levels of difficulty. For the success of this training program, the essential presence of a guide, tutor or parent is recommended during the learning process of the student, so that they can be guided in the face of doubts and encouraged in the face of obstacles that may arise. So students are encouraged to start their training as soon as possible and become a successful contestant in Math Olympiads, and parents are encouraged to ensure and closely monitor the proper preparation of their children.

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. More than eighty countries are involved. Containing numerous exercises, illustrations, hints and solutions, presented in a lucid and thought-provoking style, this text provides a wide range of skills required in competitions such as the Mathematical Olympiad. More than fifty problems in Euclidean geometry involving integers and rational numbers are presented. Early chapters cover elementary problems while later sections break new ground in certain areas and are a greater challenge for the more adventurous reader. The text is ideal for Mathematical Olympiad training and also serves as a supplementary text for students in pure mathematics, particularly number theory and geometry. Dr. Christopher Bradley was formerly a Fellow and Tutor in Mathematics at Jesus College, Oxford, Deputy Leader of the British Mathematical Olympiad Team and for several years Secretary of the British Mathematical Olympiad Committee.

Each summer six math whizzes selected from nearly a half-million American teens compete against the world's best problem solvers at the International Mathematical Olympiad.Steve Olson followed the six 2001 contestants from the intense tryouts to the Olympiad's nail-biting final rounds to discover not only what drives these extraordinary kids but what makes them both unique and typical. In the process he provides fascinating insights into the science of intelligence and learning and, finally, the nature of genius.Brilliant, but defying all the math-nerd stereotypes, these teens want to excel in whatever piques their curiosity, and they are curious about almost everything - music, games, politics, sports, literature. One team member is ardent about both water polo and creative writing. Another plays four musical instruments. For fun and entertainment during breaks, the Olympians invent games of mind-boggling difficulty.Though driven by the glory of winning this ultimate math contest, they are in many ways not so different from other teenagers, finding pure joy in indulging their personal passions. Beyond the the Olympiad, Olson sheds light on many questions, from why Americans feel so queasy about math, to why so few girls compete in the subject, to whether or not talent is innate.Inside the cavernous gym where the competition takes place, Count Down uncovers a fascinating subculture and its engaging, driven inhabitants.
