The Years Of Rice And Salt written by Kim Stanley Robinson and has been published by Spectra this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-06-03 with Fiction categories.

With the same unique vision that brought his now classic Mars trilogy to vivid life, bestselling author Kim Stanley Robinson boldly imagines an alternate history of the last seven hundred years. In his grandest work yet, the acclaimed storyteller constructs a world vastly different from the one we know. . . . “A thoughtful, magisterial alternate history from one of science fiction’s most important writers.”—The New York Times Book Review It is the fourteenth century and one of the most apocalyptic events in human history is set to occur—the coming of the Black Death. History teaches us that a third of Europe’s population was destroyed. But what if the plague had killed 99 percent of the population instead? How would the world have changed? This is a look at the history that could have been—one that stretches across centuries, sees dynasties and nations rise and crumble, and spans horrible famine and magnificent innovation. Through the eyes of soldiers and kings, explorers and philosophers, slaves and scholars, Robinson navigates a world where Buddhism and Islam are the most influential and practiced religions, while Christianity is merely a historical footnote. Probing the most profound questions as only he can, Robinson shines his extraordinary light on the place of religion, culture, power—and even love—in this bold New World. “Exceptional and engrossing.”—New York Post “Ambitious . . . ingenious.”—Newsday

This Ms. is written in the romantic adventure genre, with the various love affairs of the characters taking place against the 1960S backdrop of South West Africa and Angola, when it declared its independence from Portugal, becoming the Peoples Republic of Angola in November 1975. The characters include: * Nord, the only son of the farming Nordman family. His actual mother is a Nama girl, of Dutch and Khoi-Khoi descent. He is brought up by the farmers Dutch wife, Grietje, as her own son. * Emilie, the daughter of the wealthy neighbouring farmer, Antonin, and his wife, Gina. Emilie is born when Nord is 12 years of age (and like a member of their family). Emilies mother dies after a snake- bite on the farm when Emilie is 6 years old. * Shaba is a young African boy who loses his family in a village massacre in Zaire. He flees with his grandfather, the only surviving family of the ruling chief, and they disappear into the highlands of neighbouring Angola. A lonely child, his grandfather looks after him, but only with a sense of duty. He finds consolation with a herd of the royal black sable, following them in the forests until he is 10 years of age, when he accompanies his grandfather, recruited by Antonin to work for him on the farm in South West Africa. When Emilie learns to walk, the 15 year-old Shaba becomes her guardian. * Ki is the Bushman who is sent to the Nordman farm when he loses his right hand in a trap. He adopts the young boy as his spiritual son, and teaches him to live in the bush. Nord adopts his values and his expertise, which stands him in good stead when he becomes a reconnaissance scout for the South West African police force on the border of South West and Angola in the 1960s and 70s. The Bushman is always in the background, and an integral part of the novel.

Tyler West is a mineral salts miner who was enclosed in a capsule deep beneath the moon's surface. He was awakened from sub-lunar hibernation to find he may have slept for as long as 9,000 years. Upon his return to the unoccupied Moon Station Armstrong, he found himself alone, and void of communications with earth. Tyler views an account prepared by Lemuel Peterson, the last known man alive. He recounts the amazing Antaeus suit, space piracy, wars, and global nuclear devastation of his home planet. The recorded message takes Tyler and the reader on a journey filled with conflict between good and evil, scientific miracles, personal relationships, nature's balance, and the fate of mankind. Tyler desperately tries to retrieve the other hibernating miners, still trapped beneath the moon's surface. Fates of the miners, the world, and of mankind remain uncertain.
