This book is a product of investigations conducted within the Global Utility Research Unit (Guru) of Agici Corporate Finance (Milan, Italy). More specifically, it is the result of a project developed by the Observatory on Alliances and Strategies in the Pan-European Utility Market set-up seven years ago with the contribution of Accenture. The project, entitled “Pan-European Gas Industry Scenario – Truth and Lies”, was presented at the 2008 Milan annual international conference (www. agici. it). I would therefore like to thank Luca Cesari, Claudio Arcudi and Massimo Pagella from Accenture for their continued support. The scope of this book is to shed some light on a market, that of natural gas, which is highly complex and at the same time of fundamental importance for Europe for at least the next 20 years. We do not intend to build a theory but only to develop a better understanding of the key factors. We fully recognise that the each of the issues we cover deserves further investigation and we are also well aware that we may have omitted a number of important considerations and topics. These shortcomings are - at least in part - justified by the desire to keep the book to a r- sonable size for editorial reasons.

Natural gas has increasingly appeared as an important policy choice for China's government to modify high carbon energy consumption structure and deal with environmental problems. This study is aimed to develop the logistic and logistic-population model based approach to forecast the medium- (2020) to long- (2035) term natural gas demand in China. The adopted modelling approach is relatively simple, compared with other forecasting approaches. In order to further improve the forecasting precision, the Levenberg-Marquardt Algorithm (LMA) has been implemented to estimate the parameters of the logistic model. The forecasting results show that China's natural gas demand will reach 330-370 billion m3 in the medium-term and 500-590 billion m3 in the long-term. Moreover, the forecasting results of this study were found close in studies conducted by the national and international institutions and scholars. The growing natural gas demand will cause significant increase in import requirements and will increase China's natural gas import dependency. The outcomes of this study are expected to assist the energy planners and policy makers to chalk out relevant natural gas supply and demand side management policies.

Natural gas is an increasingly important source of the world s energy. Estimating future supplies of this valuable commodity is an important economic and strategic endeavor. However, world gas supply forecasting has proved difficult because its exploration, transportation, and customer bases depend so heavily on fluctuating economic factors. Gas production fluctuations from several countries were affected by the relationship between gas and oil industries, economic burdens, and governmental-policy implementations. This work presents innovative approaches for analyzing and forecasting natural gas supply for individual countries and the world. These new methods include the multicyclic modeling, artificial intelligence technology, and time-series analysis. Most industrialized countries are depleting their gas resources much faster than are developing countries. Fuel switching and gas dependence by industrial and commercial sectors and production decline of crude oil in these countries are among the reasons for the high depletion rate. Russia and major Arabian Gulf countries will be major sources of world gas supply representing about 62% of world s future recoverable conventional gas.

The workshop examined the following three questions: (1) What projections have been made by government agencies for the U.S. supply of and demand for natural gas over the next 10 to 20 years? (2) Where are the current natural gas reserves and resources? (3) By what means and by how much can future reserves, resources, and production be increased?

The global trend to replace traditional fossil fuels like coal and oil with clean burning gas has been spurred on largely by heightened environmental concerns and international commitments to comply with noxious emission limits. The physical and combustion characteristics of natural gas are able to respond to these environmental concerns, thus providing highly industrialized nations in particular with a means to meet the requirements of international environmental agreements. The use of natural gas also includes the important advantage of high efficiency in gas-to-electricity conversion, a factor central to developing nations. Both the above have created a new demand sector for natural gas, which is reflected in the substantial growth of internationally traded gas over the last decade. This volume covers topics ranging from the commercial opportunities and constraints relating to natural gas exploitation - and its implications for the global oil industry - to the emerging gas technologies that are likely to chart its future development. The book also assesses the impact of government regulation and liberalization on the industry, from the Canadian and European perspectives, as well as regional developments in the Asian market, thus presenting a broad vision of past and future trends in the natural gas industry.
