Excerpt from Foreign Armour in England The enthusiasm felt for armour is not surprising; its interest is so many-sided. Not only are collectors fascinated by it, but students of history, artists, and antiquaries. As mere decoration it appeals to some, and finds a place in their abodes; but it is among artistic people that its more ardent admirers are found. Hence it is far from rare to find the glint of arms and weapons lighting up the artist's walls. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from British and Foreign Arms and Armour Charles Boutell by his translation of Lacombe did much to foster the study, but it was from a French point of view, and his epitome of English armour and arms, though excellent in its way, is only superficial, and a digest Of his great works on Monumental Brasses. In the latter he probably did more to further the study than any preceding author; he was the first to rationally systematise the arrangement of armour in periods in consonance with the salient features it possessed, thus breaking through the previous methods of classifying it by reigns, which was Obviously absurd, or by centuries, which was equally ridiculous. I have followed his method with but little variation in the pages of this book, inasmuch as no better arrangement is extant. It is a matter for great pride to myself that such standard works should have emanated from a former Hon. Secretary of the St. Albans and Herts Architectural and Archaeo logical Society, and if the present volume should in any degree further the good work of my predecessor it will have achieved the height of my ambition. Hewitt is de lightful reading, but his arrangement is unsystematic and involved; to the advanced student, however, he is invalu able. Thc later works of Demmin, Clephan, Gardner, &c., are masterly monographs upon the subject, but hopelessly out Of place in the hands of a beginner. Excerpt from Armour in England From the Earliest Times to the Reign of James the First In the two succeeding centuries, which were to elapse before the country definitely inclined to become English, an intensely Celtic feeling, embodied in the legends of King Arthur and wholly opposed to Roman ideas, had time to spring up. Judged by their ornament, it is to this period that most of the bronze enamelled arms and trappings in the British Museum belong. The golden corselet found in a barrow in Flint. Excerpt from Handbook of Arms and Armor, European and Oriental: Including the William H. Riggs Collection It is, then, from an examination of good specimens of armor and arms of various periods that one real izes that they well deserve their place in a museum of art. And in this conclusion we need consider neither their historical value, as a means of picturing more accurately scenes and personages of known periods, nor their sentimental interest - which they possess to a degree rarely found in other objects of art - nor their supposed mystical significance. In the last regard, we recall the myths of god-like armorers and enchanted arms, which belonged to all early times and to all peoples.
