Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled Foreign Companies and Foreign Direct Investment in Hong Kong Submitted by Su Bei for the degree of Master of Arts at The University of Hong Kong in June 2005 This study provides a systematic investigation of recent developing trends and characteristics of FDI and MNCs in Hong Kong, examines their impact on the local economy, and identifies the role of Hong Kong as a regional hyper service hub. This study also analyzes Hong Kong's advantages and competitiveness in attracting foreign direct investment and serving as a business base for multinational corporations. In addition, it makes a comparison between Hong Kong and its main competitors in the region. It is found that Hong Kong remains an important regional base for multinational companies, an important investment destination, and a leading commercial city in this region. Although Hong Kong faces the probability that others would overtake it, in the short term it is expected to continue playing an important role as a bridgehead for China and in linking it with the rest of the world. It will also sustain itself as a key point for business and trade in the Asia-Pacific region, strongly attracting foreign enterprises to invest. The study also shows that FDI and Headquarters Economy are more likely to play a positive role in Hong Kong's economy.
