Foreign direct investment is an important part of an increasingly global political economy. This book explores the consequences of this investment in six countries in the Global South. The country comparison chapters detail the political and economic situations of these countries, and their policies and experiences with foreign direct investment. One chapter examines the statistical patterns among foreign direct investment and its expected outcomes. The analysis indicates that the effects of foreign direct investment are shaped by existing development patterns.

During the 1990s, the governments of South Asian countries acted as ‘facilitators’ to attract FDI. As a result, the inflow of FDI increased. However, to become an attractive FDI destination as China, Singapore, or Brazil, South Asia has to improve the local conditions of doing business. This book, based on research that blends theory, empirical evidence, and policy, asks and attempts to answer a few core questions relevant to FDI policy in South Asian countries: Which major reforms have succeeded? What are the factors that influence FDI inflows? What has been the impact of FDI on macroeconomic performance? Which policy priorities/reforms needed to boost FDI are pending? These questions and answers should interest policy makers, academics, and all those interested in FDI in the South Asian region and in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Based upon thorough statistical analysis, the book presents exhaustive case-studies of foreign investment policy in 'metropolitan' countries and of the experiences of 'host' countries throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America. With a wide geographical and historical focus, it also makes an important contribution to current debates on dependency theory.

This is the first book-length study of foreign direct investment in Southeast Asia during both the late colonial period and in the contemporary period. It covers all major countries receiving foreign investment in the region and embraces the entire twentieth century. Pioneering under the protective umbrella of European colonialism is depicted with examples from French Indochina, British Malaya, Dutch Indonesia and the Philippines under American rule. The arrival of today's Asian investors, from Japan and the four Asian NICs, is described after a brief interlude about the transitionary period of warfare, decolonization and assertion of newly independent states. Special attention is given to the impact of foreign investment on the economic development of the host country. The colonial drain is contrasted with today's prospects for transfers of technology in an area that is once again attractive for foreign capital.

This ECLAC annual report sets out and analyses the main foreign direct investment (FDI) trends in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. In the region, FDI inflows were up (by 13.2%) year on year for the first time in five years, at US$ 184.287 billion. This performance is explained by higher flows into just a few countries, however, mainly Brazil and Mexico. Moreover, it does not reflect equity investment, but higher inflows in the form of intercompany loans and, to a lesser extent, reinvestment of earnings. Manufactures and services were the sectors receiving most equity, although there was a slight rise in investment in natural resource sectors compared with 2018.

Foreign Direct Investment in Brazil: Post-Crisis Economic Development in Emerging Markets explores both the inward and outward ways foreign direct investment (FDI) can help Brazil sustain economic growth and development in the sometimes hostile post-global crisis era. Inward and outward FDI have major roles to play in reviving Brazil’s growth momentum and the country’s transition to a new growth paradigm less dependent on commodity exports. The book provides a comprehensive discussion on the analytical framework of FDI and the policy environment influencing the patterns and development of FDI in Brazil. It compares Brazil to other developing countries, but its focus rests on how, and to what extent, the global crisis is shaping the Brazilian institutional environment and its implications for FDI. Covers an important contemporary development issue focusing on the experience of one of the fastest growing and largest emerging economies in the world Presents econometric findings using data at different levels of aggregation Provides an in-depth study on the determinants of FDI and their relations to institutions Explores both the inward and outward ways foreign direct investment (FDI) can help Brazil sustain economic growth and development in the sometimes hostile post-global crisis era

Transformations Of Global Prosperity written by Caf Dowlah and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-19 with Business & Economics categories.

This book presents an in-depth understanding of the transformation of modern economy in the twenty-first century by examining the interface and interplay of three key forces of contemporary global economy—Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Multinational Enterprises (MNEs), and Global Value Chains (GVCs)—and how the emerging nexus of these forces has already ushered in revolutionary transformation in global production, investment, trade, and employment in recent decades. A distinctive feature of the book is that it situates the contemporary GVC revolution—that envisages fragmentation and dispersion of production processes across the world based on competitive costs and quality—as a natural progression of the traditional FDIs-MNEs nexus, which emphasized internationalization of production and trade in search of profits, resources, markets, or cheap labour. Moreover, the book provides a comprehensive analysis, from historical, theoretical and empirical perspectives, of both traditional FDIs-MNEs Nexus that dominated the world economy until the end of the twentieth century, and of the New Nexus of FDIs-MNEs-GVCs, that has opened grand opportunities for global prosperity by providing short-cut paths to industrialization and economic growth for less developed countries. As an exemplar, the book examines GVCs in automobiles—a medium-tech manufacturing activity with numerous backward and forward linkages—to demonstrate how the FDI-MNE-GVC interface in this sector has wedged industrialization, employment, and trade in six emerging countries/regions—Brazil, Central and Eastern Europe, China, India, Mexico and Thailand.
