This is the Committees fifth report on foreign policy aspects of the war against terrorism since the events of 11 September 2001. It makes 74 conclusions and recommendations on a broad range of issues, including the political and security situations in Iraq and Afghanistan and related reconstruction issues; the role of Pakistan in the war against terrorism and human rights issues; Russias foreign policy role, the war in Chechnya, chemical weapons stockpiles and non-proliferation programmes; the Israeli-Palestine conflict; international law aspects, including collective action through the UN, anticipatory self-defence and humanitarian intervention; and the continuing threat from al Qaeda. The text of UN Security Council Resolution 1546, adopted in June 2004, is included as an appendix. The range of issues discussed reflects the Committees view that the diverse threats to security posed by terrorism and failed states are, or could become, inter-connected, and that they need to be considered and countered as part of a coherent strategy.

An interim report was made in June 2002 on the Government's response to the terrorist attacks on the US on 11 September 2001. (HC 384, session 2001-02, ISBN 0215003756). Between that date and the beginning of October, the main public focus of the war against terrorism has shifted towards addressing the threat from Iraq. The debate about the extent of this threat, the legal, diplomatic and security implications of possible military action and the relevance of Iraq to the wider war against terrorism are detailed in this report. Also examined are the terrorist attacks which took place in Kuwait, the Gulf of Aden, Bali and Russia and in November in Kenya. The Committee draws conclusions from these attacks regarding the state of the al Qaeda network after a year of "war". Questions are also raised about the conflict between Israel and Palestine and Britain's relations with the broader Arab world. Of central importance to any inquiry on this subject is the relationship between the Government and the Bush administration and this is also examined in this report. In the June report it was concluded that the complexity of issues to be addressed in the war against terrorism and the conclusion that it would be lengthy have not changed since then. This report is therefore an interim assessment of the continuing threat and of progress of the international coalition against terrorism.

This is the seventh report in a series on the foreign policy aspects of the war against terrorism. During the course of these inquiries the Committee has covered subjects such as the fall of the Taliban and efforts to rebuild Afghanistan, shifts in the organisation of Al Qaeda, the war and subsequent situation in Iraq, multilateral efforts to tackle terrorist financing and global work to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. This report returns to a number of these themes and discusses the situations in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Iraq and Iran. In addition it looks at the UK's relations with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Not only are both countries allies in the war against terrorism, they also have experience in understanding and then thwarting the recruitment of extremists.

Obama S Foreign Policy written by Michelle Bentley and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-08 with Political Science categories.

This edited volume is an innovative analysis of President Barack Obama’s foreign policy, security and counter-terrorism policy, specifically within the context of ending the now infamous War on Terror. The book adopts a comparative approach, analysing change and continuity in US foreign policy during Obama’s first term in office vis-à-vis the foreign policy of the War on Terror, initiated by George W. Bush following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Despite being heralded as an agent of change, since his election in 2008 Obama has faced criticism that his foreign policy is effectively the same as what went before and that the War on Terror is still alive and well. Far from delivering wholesale change, Obama has been accused of replicating and even reinforcing the approach, language and policies that many anticipated he would reject. With contributions from a range of US foreign policy experts, this volume analyses the extent to which these criticisms of continuity are correct, identifying how the failure to end the War on Terror is manifest and explaining the reasons that have made enacting change in foreign policy so difficult. In addressing these issues, contributions to this volume will discuss continuity and change from a range of perspectives in International Relations and Foreign Policy Analysis. This work will be of great interest to students and scholars of US foreign policy, security studies and American politics.
