The role doors and windows play in shaping the life and structure of Roman private dwellings has been underestimated; they are structures that connect not only rooms but houses to the outside world, and they relate to privacy, security, and light in domestic spaces. This volume analyses these structures as an essential part of daily life.

Rome, Ostia, Pompeii: Movement and Space demonstrates how studies of the Roman city are shifting focus from static architecture to activities and motion within urban spaces. This volume provides detailed case studies from the three best-known cities from Roman Italy, revealing how movement contributes to our understanding of the ways different elements of society interacted in space, and how the movement of people and materials shaped urban development. The chapters in this book examine the impressions left by the movement of people and vehicles as indentations in the archaeological and historical record, and as impressions upon the Roman urban consciousness. Through a broad range of historical issues, this volume studies movement as it is found at the city gate, in public squares and on the street, and as it is represented in texts. Its broad objective is to make movement meaningful for understanding the economic, cultural, political, religious, and infrastructural behaviours that produced different types and rhythms of interaction in the Roman city. This volume's interdisciplinary approach will inform the understanding of the city in classics, ancient history, archaeology and architectural history, as well as cultural studies, town planning, urban geography, and sociology.

Whitewash Ii written by Harold Weisberg and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-22 with History categories.

Weisberg’s first volume in the Whitewash series dissected the Warren Report and its failure to confront evidence of conspiracy in the JFK assassination. In this sequel he shows how the agencies of the investigation—the FBI, the Secret Service, the Dallas police, and the lawyers who worked for the Commission—made this possible by often corrupting evidence and consistently avoiding pursuit of clear and critical evidence pointing to and defining a conspiracy. The author demonstrates that their failure was rooted not only in institutional inability but also in a deliberately twisted investigative structure. In the years since its original publication in 1974, the books in Weisberg’s Whitewash series have become classics of assassination literature and have established the author as one of the premier investigators and researchers in his field. Decades later, the shocking revelations painstakingly detailed in his work have lost none of their impact, and the information uncovered beneath the government’s whitewash is crucial to understanding the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Alphaherpesviruses written by Sandra Knowles Weller and has been published by Caister Academic Press Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Science categories.

Alphaherpesviruses are a fascinating group of DNA viruses that includes important human pathogens such as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), HSV-2, and varicella-zoster virus (VZV): the causative agents of cold sores, genital ulcerous disease, and chickenpox/shingles, respectively. A key attribute of these viruses is their ability to establish lifelong latent infection in the peripheral nervous system of the host. Such persistence requires subversion of the host's immune system and intrinsic antiviral defense mechanisms. Understanding the mechanisms of the immune evasion and what triggers viral reactivation is a major challenge for today's researchers. This has prompted enormous research efforts into understanding the molecular and cellular biology of these viruses. This up-to-date and comprehensive volume aims to distill the most important research in this area providing a timely overview of the field. Topics covered include: transcriptional regulation, DNA replication, translational control, virus entry and capsid assembly, the role of microRNAs in infection and oncolytic vectors for cancer therapy. In addition there is coverage of virus-host interactions, including apoptosis, subversion of host protein quality control and DNA damage response pathways, autophagy, establishment and reactivation from latency, interferon responses, immunity and vaccine development. Essential reading for everyone working with alphaherpesviruses and of interest to all virologists working on latent infections.

Computationally Modeling Roman Domestic Art And Architecture written by Kelly Elizabeth McClinton and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021 with Architecture, Domestic categories.

The image we have of domestic space in the Roman world is a fragmented one. This fractured image is partly because of the limited nature of the material that has survived over the intervening centuries. Further complicating our picture of Roman housing is that buildings were built and rebuilt. Decorative elements were moved both prior to and following excavation. Consequently, ancient houses display a jumble of art and architecture from many periods and styles. Despite these challenges, they are also an ideal place to further our understanding of topics such as Roman identity, Roman daily life, and larger socio-economic patterns across the empire. This dissertation will consider how computational models present unique technological affordances in studying this fragmented material record. Each chapter examines a specific computational modeling tool in detail and considers how such tools can further research in the study of domestic Roman art and architecture and the limitations of such methods. Future research directions and potential issues inherent to computational modeling are presented in the concluding chapter.
