In 2012, a Forestry Special Interest Group (FSIG) was founded within the Canadian Operational Research Society (CORS). Besides a general commitment to promoting the application of operational research (OR) to forest management and forest products industry problems, the FSIG has two concrete mandates: organizing the forestry cluster at the annual CORS conference, and managing the editorial process for forestry-themed special issues of INFOR. The FSIG has been very successful in the first of these two mandates, with record attendance at the forestry cluster over the last four years, hosting of several special sessions, financial and in-kind support from the NSERC Strategic Network on Value Chain Optimization (VCO), and the inauguration of the David Martell Student Paper Prize in Forestry (DMSPPF). This is the first compilation of forestry-themed papers since the inauguration of the CORS FSIG. The six pieces selected for the special issue, now published as a book, feature applications of OR to a wide range of forest management and forest products industry contexts, including supply-chain planning, lumber production planning, demand-driven harvest and transportation planning, and fire-aware wood supply planning. This book was originally published as a special issue of the INFOR: Information Systems and Operational Research journal.

“A stochastic model is presented to generate daily values of precipitation, solar radiation, maximum temperature and minimum temperature. Precipitation is modeled by a Markov chain-exponential model. Solar radiation, maximum and minimum temperature are modeled using a multivariate generating model conditioned on the wet or dry state of the day and time period. The model is formulated such that outputs can be used in simulation exercises to test the effect of changing climatic conditions on forest ecosystem processes.”

This book provides a synthesis of methods that have been used in both practice and research to develop forest harvest schedules (plans of action) and to assess alternative policy scenarios. Beginning with exact mathematical methods (linear, mixed integer, and goal programming), the book provides a brief history of their conception, followed by an approachable description of the processes commonly employed to search a solution space for the optimal solution to a problem. Hill-climbing, random search, and binary search processes are then described as relatively simple alternatives to the exact methods. Heuristic search processes (threshold accepting, simulated annealing, tabu search, and genetic algorithms) are then described as semi-rational, biased alternatives to solving forest harvest scheduling problems. The closing remarks of the book provide context for the use of forest harvest scheduling in addressing today's contemporary forest management issues. In addition to a set of common-sense principles that are introduced throughout the book, provided in the book is a fifty-question exam associated with the content introduced.
