There is growing knowledge about and appreciation of the importance of Non-timber Forest Products (NTFPs) to rural livelihoods in developing countries, and to a lesser extent, developed countries. However, there is also an assumption on the part of policy-makers that any harvesting of wild animal or plant products from the forests and other natural and modified ecosystems must be detrimental to the long-term viability of target populations and species. This book challenges this idea and shows that while examples of such negative impacts certainly exist, there are also many examples of sustainable harvesting systems for NTFPs. The chapters review and present coherent and scientifically sound information and case studies on the ecologically sustainable use of NTFPs. Forest provides livelihoods for hundreds of millions of people worldwide, through production of different products. The purpose of this study was to analyze the contribution of collected forest products for local livelihoods and forest conservation in Masha and Andracha Woredas of Sheka Zone in the Southern Nations and Nationalities and Peoples Regional State. Systematic sampling and simple random sampling techniques were employed to conduct survey of households and markets, respectively. Furthermore, vegetation data were collected in a total of 160 plots (20m x 20m) in four PAs following gradient of accessibility (village to deep forest). The analyzed household survey data results showed honey from beehives, kororima (Aframomum corrorima), timiz (Piper capense), wild honey and cultivated coffee were collected mainly for commercial purposes whereas bamboo culm, fire wood, medicinal plants, wild gesho (Rhamnus prinoides), lianas and wild coffee were collected for subsistence. Income from forest products support 71 % in Beto, 22.1 % in Abelo, 74.6 % in Chegecha and 26.8 % in Modi (PA) of the average annual income of local people.

Cameroon's tropical forest is home to numerous plants and animals. It is also inhabited by Baka pygmies who are foragers and Bantu farmers. These communities have developed forest-dependent livelihoods, cultures and religions. Destruction of the forest by commercial and state interests, subsistence agriculture and the harvesting of products has necessitated a considerable upsurge in environmental protection projects to conserve and rehabilitate ecosystems, forests, soils and water resources. Ultimately, the approach to conservation that is applied is the responsibility of the government and international development agencies. The case studies documented seek to demonstrate that a broader perspective linking environmental protection and human welfare is important for two reasons. First, it addresses the rights and needs of local people and more marginal groups in society. Second, it also ensures that fundamental conservation objectives are achieved in practice with the participation of local people. The book develop guidelines for a more integrative and socially-aware approach to environmental planning and project design and implementation. It outlines a participatory mapping procedure for the design and implementation of community forest programmes. This is a valuable book for land resource managers, environmentalists, environmental biologists, conservators, field workers and technicians involved with environmental conservation.
