The woodlands of Japan vary substantially from north to south, and the patterns of their use and abuse differed from area to area during the Edo, or early modern, period (1600–1868). Nevertheless, the basic characteristics and rhythms of forest history were common to all of Japan (except the sparsely populated northern island of Hokkaidō). It is possible, therefore, to illuminate the general experience by scrutinizing a section of the whole. The section selected here is Akita, a prefecture of northern Japan whose forests are among the nation’s most famous. Three considerations make this choice attractive. The topic has clearly delineated boundaries, largely because the Akita region was a single coherent political unit during the Edo period; the documentation on the early modern forest situation there is extensive and accessible; finally, and as a consequence of the second factor, Japanese scholars have already published excellent studies on key aspects of Akita forestry. These factors have made this a relatively convenient area to examine and discuss in the short compass of this study.

Excerpt from Forestry of Japan This work aims to give an adequate idea of forestry in Japan, and treats of State, Crown, and private forests. More attention is naturally given to State and Crown forests on account of the insufficiency of information about private forests. All the data were prepared by the Department of Agriculture and Commerce being mostly taken from report for 1902, when the data for that year were not available, the reports for 1903 or 1901 were used, preference being given to the later year. As the units of distance, ri, cho, ken, and shaku have been used, equivalent to about 21/2 miles, 1,200 yards, 6 ft. and 1 ft. respectively. The unit of capacity is the koku, equivalent to 181 litres. The unit of weight is the kin, which is almost equal to 1 lbs. The unit of area is the cho, equal to about 21/2 acres. The unit for measuring timber is the shakujime, equivalent to 12 cu. ft., and that for fuel wood is the tana, or 72 cubic ft. The monetary unit is the yen, equal to about $0.50 U.S. gold. In many cases, the dates are given according to the Japanese system the first year of Meiji being 1868. All the reports are made for the fiscal year which extending from April 1st to March 31st. The common Japanese names of trees together with the botanical ones are given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Riparian forests along streams and rivers are diverse in species, structure, and regeneration processes, and have important ecological functions in maintaining landscape and biodiversity. This book discusses riparian forests from subpolar to warm-temperate zones, covering headwater streams, braided rivers on alluvial fans, and low-gradient meandering rivers. It presents the dynamics and mechanisms that govern the coexistence of riparian tree species, tree demography, the response to water stress of trees, and the conservation of endangered species, and focuses on natural disturbances, life-history strategies, and the ecophysiology of trees. Because many riparian landscapes have been degraded and are disappearing at an alarming rate, the regeneration of the remaining riparian ecosystems is urgent. With contributions by more than 20 experts in diverse fields, this book offers useful information for the conservation, restoration, and rehabilitation of riparian ecosystems that remain in world streams and rivers.

This book is the first to analyze the environmental impact of Japanese trade, corporations, and aid on timber management in the context of Southeast Asian political economies. It is also one of the first comprehensive studies of why Southeast Asian states are unable to enforce forest policies and regulations.
