Susannah Griffith wishes she had spent less time thinking about forgiveness. But as a Christian minister, a biblical scholar, and a survivor of abuse, she has learned a lot about it. In Forgiveness after Trauma, Griffith explores what the Bible says--and doesn't say--about the biblical call to forgive. She helps readers understand this command in ways that are healing and restorative, framing it within broader concerns around lament, anger, accountability, release and rebirth, and reconciliation. The result is what Griffith calls "trauma-informed forgiveness," which takes seriously God's forgiveness of sinners while centering survivors of abuse and aiding their healing. This view also empowers those who have been harmed in other ways by abuses of power and justice in religious institutions. Readers will resonate with Griffith's astute biblical analysis and personal reflection, which point to God's love--a love that never includes abuse and strives for justice for the vulnerable.

Trauma And Forgiveness written by C. Fred Alford and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-09 with Psychology categories.

Contrary to the view of trauma popularized by literary theorists, Trauma and Forgiveness argues that the traumatized are capable of representing their experience and that we should therefore listen more and theorize less. Using stories and case studies, including testimonies from Holocaust survivors, as well as the victims of 'ordinary' trauma, C. Fred Alford shows that, while the traumatized are generally capable of representing their experience, this does little to heal them. He draws on the British Object Relations tradition in psychoanalysis to argue that forgiveness, which might be expected to help heal the traumatized, is generally an attempt to avoid the hard work of mourning losses that can never be made whole. Forgiveness is better seen as a virtue in the classical sense, a recognition of human vulnerability. The book concludes with an extended case study of the essayist Jean Améry and his refusal to forgive.

Forgiveness is a central tenet of the Christian faith and yet it is so difficult to embrace and put into practise. With sensitivity and grace, Dr Sue Atkinson explores what it means. The example of Christians forgiving others is often heralded as one of the great signs of Christian love and yet the call to forgive can have a darker side, particularly for victims of injustice and trauma as it can add to their despair and guilt if they do not 'feel' love or the ability to forgive. Well-meaning Christians can make their situation worse with insensitivity and bluntness. In this timely and empathetic book, full of anecdote, story and illustration, Dr Sue Atkinson, tackles what the call to forgive really means. What do we really do when we forgive? Exploring Jesus teaching about forgiveness and justice, she explodes myths and outlines practical ways in which we can let go of resentments. Highly accessible and sensitive this important book will be a means of grace and comfort for those embracing the challenges of forgiveness.

Charles W. Grimsley is a 2 tour Viet Nam Army LRRP. He is a U.S. Chaplain working at a Veterans Health Care System facility. Charles has been facilitating a Spirituality Group working with veterans from all branches of service for several years. While working with the veterans at the hospital he noticed a correlation between those who managed to conquer their addictive behaviors when they actively implemented Spirituality and the forgiveness components; the forgiveness of self and others. Charles earned his Doctorate from Denver Seminary with emphasis in Marriage and Family Counseling. While writing his Doctoral Thesis he developed a group study of combat veterans diagnosed with PTSD to prove the validity of his thesis. Past and present returning combat veterans exhibit symptoms of PTSD: Addictions are rampant, uncontrolled anger, horrifying memories and stories. Drug therapy does not seem to be effective. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and depression are frequent diagnoses among combat veterans. Emerging symptoms of PTSD, TBI, and depression often go unrecognized or may be slow to develop (Milliken et al., 2007) and not addressed until problems become critical. "When 20 veterans die by suicide and 14 veterans hadn't touched VA care, it means that we can't do this alone." Dr. Caitlin Thompson, Executive Director VA Office of Suicide Prevention. Veterans from all eras continue to struggle with issues related to their combat experience and reintegration to civilian life following military service. 23% of women veterans report at least one sexual assault while in the military. Yes, help awaits.... It is not in the forgetting that the answer lies, but in the remembering that healing manifest itself, yet utilizing the forgiveness component. It is the matter of unlocking the unconscious, to open the awareness, thus the work to be done is buried within and entails the Journey of Freedom through forgiveness, necessitating and connecting applications of; Theology, Psychology, and Spirituality.
