“A compelling, heart-wrenching story” of three generations of women and the dark secret that upends their lives—from the author of The Last Suppers (The Durango Herald). On a hot, humid July morning, sixteen-year-old Cissy Pickering calmly and deliberately shoots her father in the back. To their Mississippi community, the death of well-regarded attorney Richard Pickering is a fascinating scandal. To Cissy’s distraught mother, Caroline, it’s an unforgivable crime. But in Cissy’s troubled mind, it was the only way she knew to save her younger sisters, the two people she loves most in the world. Janelle Clayton, the family’s matriarch, has kept her distance from her daughter, Caroline—a fact she now regrets—yet she hopes to do right by her granddaughter, whom she believes implicitly. When Cissy is remanded to the Greater Mississippi State Hospital, new revelations drive her to retreat from reality. It will fall to Janelle to become Cissy’s advocate and rescuer. And over the course of an unlikely road trip, Janelle and Cissy will confront the truths they’ve hidden from the world and themselves—finding courage, resilience, and a bond tender and tough enough to transform them both. “Mikulencak tackles the complex ramifications of abuse, from unwanted notoriety to complex questions of who is responsible, with grace and empathy . . . Forgiveness Road is haunting and poignant.”—Booklist Praise for The Last Suppers “Held me riveted from the first page to the last, a gorgeous novel that finds beauty in the most unlikely of places.”—Susan Wiggs, #1 New York Times bestselling author “A haunting study of race relations, compassion, and mystery. A must read

A fascinating book about our struggle to forgive—and how we can—from a renowned psychologist and award-winning author. Why do we harden our hearts, even against those we want to love? Why do we find it so hard to admit being wrong? Why are the worst grudges the ones we hold against ourselves? When we nurse our resentments, Robert Karen says, we are acting from an insecure aspect of the self that harbors unresolved pain from childhood. But we also have a forgiving self which is not compliant or fake, but rather the strongest, most loving part of who we are. Through it, we are able to voice anger without doing damage, to acknowledge our own part in what has gone wrong, to see the flaws in ourselves and others as part of our humanity. Using movies, people in the news, and sessions from his practice, Karan illuminate how we can move beyond our feelings of being wronged without betraying our legitimate anger and need for repair. The forgiving self, when we are able to locate it, brings relief from compulsive self-hatred and bitterness, and allows for a re-emergence of love.

The world was wrenched with the story of the 1994 killings of nearly a million people in the East African nation of Rwanda. TIME magazine reported that a depth of evil had overtaken that land, so searing to the soul as to be virtually incomprehensible. Rwanda's gaping needs captured the world's imagination, so that countless people went there to help. Refugees fled to camps just beyond Rwanda's borders, and the world's great humanitarian aid organizations followed. As the refugees returned home - many of them with their houses having been taken over or destroyed by others, and none of them allowed to have jobs for six months-it became clear that, despite the overflowing prisons and the attempt to bring to justice those who had murdered in the genocide, the deepest need of the whole population was to find some way for forgiveness to happen, and for reconciliation to take place. The Pilgrim Center for Reconciliation is a Christian outreach ministry based in Edina, Minnesota, dedicated to healing the broken heart of the world. It was founded by The Reverend Dr. Arthur A. Rouner, Jr., following his 40+ years of pastoral ministry. In 1996, the Pilgrim Center, in partnership with World Vision U.S., developed and initiated a healing/ reconciliation ministry among Church leaders in the blood-soaked countries of Rwanda and Burundi. FORGIVENESS: THE ROAD TO RECONCILIATION is the story of the Holy Spirit's work, through the efforts of a small, three-person team from the Pilgrim Center, in an intimate retreat ministry with African church leaders. Through their participation in three-day retreats, Hutus and Tutsis alike experienced the balm of forgiveness and restoration, empowering them to "pass on" this spirit and manifestation of reconciliation throughout their own families, churches, and communities.

Remarkably, as many as sixty-six thousand churches are in conflict at this moment, and one-third of those will experience permanent damage. Though Christ commanded his followers to forgive, we often don't, and that lack of forgiveness poisons all of our relationships. Churches are particularly vulnerable to unforgiveness for a simple reason--no one has taught us what forgiveness actually is, how it benefits the forgiver and the forgiven, and, most importantly, how to forgive. The Road Home provides a pathway to forgiveness and healthy reconciliation for churches wounded by conflict. While the road it follows is not easy--just as forgiving is not easy--the result is an explosion of grace and restoration, taking relationships beyond where they were to where they were meant to be.

Get out! Run! We must leave this place! They are going to destroy this whole place! Go, children, run first! Go now! These were the final shouts nine year-old Kim Phuc heard before her world dissolved into flames—before napalm bombs fell from the sky, burning away her clothing and searing deep into her skin. It’s a moment forever captured, an iconic image that has come to define the horror and violence of the Vietnam War. Kim was left for dead in a morgue; no one expected her to survive the attack. Napalm meant fire, and fire meant death. Against all odds, Kim lived—but her journey toward healing was only beginning. When the napalm bombs dropped, everything Kim knew and relied on exploded along with them: her home, her country’s freedom, her childhood innocence and happiness. The coming years would be marked by excruciating treatments for her burns and unrelenting physical pain throughout her body, which were constant reminders of that terrible day. Kim survived the pain of her body ablaze, but how could she possibly survive the pain of her devastated soul? Fire Road is the true story of how she found the answer in a God who suffered Himself; a Savior who truly understood and cared about the depths of her pain. Fire Road is a story of horror and hope, a harrowing tale of a life changed in an instant—and the power and resilience that can only be found in the power of God’s mercy and love.
